JohnMitchell 16 #1 June 11, 2008 My 19 yo nephew made a tandem jump with me a few weeks ago while visiting us. He loved it. He's now at a DZ in another state in the IAD program to get his A license.I went to his DZ's webpage to check it out. The prices seemed a little higher than I wished he had to pay (starving college student and all), but each DZ can set their own rates. That's business. However, I saw they also charge the students $89 to join the USPA. The USPA only charges $51 for join on their webpage. What's with the $38 overcharge? Handling fee? Does this seem like a fair business practice or a soak-em-while-you-can attitude?
Butters 0 #2 June 11, 2008 Depends on if they get anything other than a USPA membership (like a logbook, googles, etc...)."That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch
NWFlyer 2 #3 June 11, 2008 Maybe they're including a SIM and logbook with that? If they're throwing both of those in there, it's close to reasonable value, but otherwise... not so much. JohnMitchell 16 #4 June 11, 2008 Nope, goggles, altimeter, and logbook are a separate package, at $189. It didn't say what type, but I would hope a good Alti 3. I was wondering if he had to buy the altimeter there or could pick one up in the DZ classifieds.
Nightingale 0 #5 June 11, 2008 Looks like he can just go to the USPA website and join online.
micduran 0 #6 June 11, 2008 I'd be concerned about a DZ making me buy anything from them. Is this a Skyride DZ?Be patient with the faults of others; they have to be patient with yours.
JohnMitchell 16 #7 June 11, 2008 QuoteLooks like he can just go to the USPA website and join online. That's what I'm going to recommend to him. Then if the DZ says that he had to join through them, at their prices, then I know they are soaking him.

NWFlyer 2 #9 June 11, 2008 The $89 doesn't seem right, even if it does include the SIM. A SIM is $25 for the pretty, bound version from the USPA web site. Or, he can just go to one of his college's computer labs with a high-speed printer and print out the PDF version. Every little bit counts for a poor college student. At my colleges print prices a full SIM would cost you thousands. Better to hose your employer and mail him one. I bet you can even get the copy department to put a nice spiral binding on it. Slappie 9 #12 June 11, 2008 You wanna know when a Student becomes a Skydiver? When they run out of enough money for student jumps. I did that. Work bought a brand new high speed double sided printer so naturally I had to 'test' it.
