Are you prepared for an emergency?

Recommended Posts

In light of the recent natural disasters around the world it got me to thinking "just how prepared am I?"

After sitting down last night and discussing this with the S.O. we have a pretty good game plan in place for a natural disaster, or other type of emergency.

How prepared are you???? Food, water, protection, evacuation plans, etc.

not at all....:( I know its a contradiction... but I cant afford anything extra... plus I live in a doublewide, in Florida... :| on a backroad, that only has one way out in the Green Swamp:| The area I live in has flooded from hurricanes and my town has dern near burnt off the map twice from wildfires... I want to have a nice place for my kids and a big yard for them to play in, so living way out in BFE is the only way I can afford this. I do what I can and just pray that as hurricane season approaches that we will make it thru unscathed....[:/]

I have an extensive emergency kit that is in a large bag on wheels. I can either roll or throw it. I change the food, water and batteries every 6 months. It also includes cat food and dollar bills in case ATMs aren't working.

I also have one in my car in case I ever got stranded somewhere.
Be yourself!

It's funny, cuz if you start thinking about the things you may / or may not have in the house you'd be surprised how much you have available.

ex.

* Camping propane stove (in case of loss of power). This will provide you with cooking / and boiling water.

* You own horses, right???? They would be a great use for an evac in certain circumstances. Pluse they can haul additional weight for you.

* Food - how much canned food / or powdered food do you have - these can last and are easily prepared in case of emergencies.

* Flashlights - good lord, we have about 10 of them around the house. Just do periodic checks to make sure the batteries are good.

* Tape - think McGyver, very useful stuff

* Whistle - kids always have them.

* If you have a basic first aid kit - GREAT - if not there are plenty of items in the house that you can use for gauze / splints etc.

As a frequent camper, I have everything in one closet: tents, sleeping bags, water jug, camp food, etc. I'm used to doing primitive camping for a week at a time. I can be up and gone in no time, and get along just fine on my own.

The only kink in the plan is gasoline availability. The Houston area saw during the hurricane Katrina disaster, that almost all gas stations dried up within three days...

So get out early, before it's too late. Or hunker down and be ready for anything.

Yeah, we discovered after talking about it last night - that all our camping gear will suit us great.

We have 2 - 2man, 1 - 3man, and 1 - 7man tent. 4 sleeping bags, 2 propane stoves, 1 water filtration system, great back packs. We have the option to head for the hills with the SUV / motorcycle, or the option to head out to sea with the sail boat. Plenty of gas cans to fill for extra fuel.

It's amazing when you actually sit down to think about how prepared one can be if they really were aware of their surroundings.

I live at the base of Mt. Rainier in Washington State. It's supposed to be the most dangerous mountain right now. I just saw a show the other day on the Discovery Channel that told me this. It showed my little town looking all peaceful. "Look! There's my house on TV!" If that mountain blows there is nothing to do. There is no way to get out of this valley on the little road in rush hour traffic much less with all the other people that will be trying to evacuate. I'm afraid there is nothing to do to prepare for something like that. [:/] No amount of food storage or shelter or anything else is going to help.

We have a camper that is normally in our driveway. It goes to the dz with us almost every weekend and it is typically stocked very well. We can hook it up in a few minutes and be gone.
If it is at the dz like it is now we can still drive there and "live" for a while if need be.
We also have a lot of camping equipment in the basement. Lots of flashlights and candles around the house, too.
Be patient with the faults of others; they have to be patient with yours.

You know I hear the mormons around here keep a stock of 2 yrs worth of food. How? Dont ask me. Just the volume of space required to keep that much grub would likely fill 1/2 of my appartment. But as for the emergency kit nah. I'm military and live less than a mile from the base so I can pretty much get what I need.

I grew up in Utah, and most of the homes have full basements of which have food storage. I know both my Mom and my Grandma would can food and we would have enough food to last the family for at least 6 mo to a year in the basement pantries. Hunting provided at least a years worth of meat.

I don't know if canning is still as huge there, but it certainly was when I was growing up.

Oh, and not all families have their own stockpiles - the churches have them.

Yes they still can food there. I'm going down there in August and can me some tomatoes and other veggies from my parents garden. Might even stop in and check out that wind tunnel they have down there while I'm there! B|

Yeah I havent been to the tunnel in a while myself (and I only live 10min away). Why not go to skydive Ogden and get some jumps in while your here.;)

I am very well prepared. I have plenty of food

I have plenty of water..

I have plenty of Ammo

I have a good stash of diesel for my electric genset.

I bought my house where I did because it is not in a place that would be greatly effected by floods( 300 ft above the flood plain), No big trees to fall on the house in an EQ or wind storm...its not near a faultso EQ should not be an issue.. tornadoes are super rare in the NW...I am not within an eruptive zone from a volcano....

I think I will do ok;)

Cool, my Mom lives about 5 mins from the new tunnel! I keep trying to talk her into it, but she wont budge.

Ogden is my home dz. Sometimes I travel and go to mesquite or eloy but primarily ogden. I'm going to carolina sky sports sometime near the 4th of Jul. Oh yeah just so my post stays OT, emergency prepardness is good.

My kids and I are planning a trip down there mid to late August after the LFL boogie is over. We're going down there to (OT) can some food storage. We are also going to partake of the Lagoon. Then I'd like to try out the wind tunnel and skydive down there too. I learned to skydive at Cedar Valley. I haven't jumped down there in about 15 years maybe? I think it's time I did that again. How high do you guys go? Do you have oxygen on the plane? After having my lungs hemorrhage from the lupus I'm a bit worried about the high altitude.[:/]

Well as far as O2 goes, theres a tube near the pilot seat for emergency prepardness type stuff, but I dont think theres any other suplemental O2 on the plane. Other than that, we usually go to 13k sometimes higher sometimes lower depending on the weather. If your lungs have difficulty with the altitude I would say do h&p's. I think the elevation at the airport is something like 4500' asl.

The tunnel is ok but I just cant see blowing (pun intended) away money on simulated freefall with no canopy time. For my money I'd rather jump.

Lagoon is fun if you have kids I guess. I went and rollercoasters just dont do it for me anymore. If you do go be sure you prepare by bringing your emergency sun lotion:D.

Oh! I know! Sun down there is bad! I usually take an umbrella as well as the emergency prepared 70 block hats, long sleeved shirts etc. (allergic to the sun) Also good to stock up on the water as well, for those emergency moments in the heat.
Yeah, I have 4 kids that like the roller coasters and think that skydiving, "is a lame sport my parents do." Go figure? :S They were in the sport before they were born! All but one is old enough to jump now but none of them do. At least the third one packs. :D

Thats cool. You should shoot me a PM when your coming down here and Ill meet you at the dz to discuss emergency procedure prepardness. But yeah water is one of those things that is a MUST wherever you go down here. The air is so dry and the sun zaps the moisture out of you before you know it. Example: While mt biking yesterday i drank 1 gal of water over the course of about 7 hrs and didnt have to pee once. On the ride home i started to get a headache and realized I was dehydrated!!! AFTER 1 GAL OF FUCKING WATER!!! Anyway, hydration and constant application of sun screen (i found the kind in the spray can is outstanding) and UT can be a pretty fun place outdoors. Its all about being prepared for those emergency situations!;)

Yeah, I can totally see that you people in Utah are all over that emergency preparedness. Probably because you hear the Prophet talk on TV about it all the time and you have those Mormon warehouses where you can go get all your food supplies for your 1 year supply of food. ;)

I'll send you a PM when I go down there and we can talk more about that then. B| By the way, do you have your 1 year supply of Millertime in your pantry? :D

I try not to buy more then about 60-90 Miller Lite's at a time. Ive found the more we have the faster we drink it. And for the record IM NOT A MUCKING FORMAN:P. But my neighbors are actually mormom missionaries (have the Jesus picture on the outside of the door).

Heres what happens when we buy a shitload of beer at one time.

OMG! I love that! I should start making a Miller lite castle with my empties too!
:D:D From the looks of your castle we're going to get along just fine. ;)

Plus you have to stock up for emergencies with the empty aluminum cans. You never know when those will come in handy in case of an emergency. They are very useful I'm sure!
