millertime24 8 #1 June 17, 2008 Just got this email regarding American Air. This shit pisses me off so fucking much I cant even see straight. Fuck airlines. Fuck AA. Fuck fuel prices. FFFUUUUUUUCCCCCKKKKKK!!!! And to think I'm going home on leave on the 30th. Now I find out I'm going to have to PAY MORE than I already have because of this stupid-ass bullshit. Team AFMC, American Airlines (AA) announced that starting 15 June 2008, they will start charging for checked baggage on all domestic flights as a result of record high fuel prices. The first piece of checked baggage will cost $15, any subsequent piece of checked baggage will cost $25, and all oversized baggage will be assessed a fee ranging from $5 to $50. However, per HQ AMC, the DOD’s official executive for passenger travel matters, the American Airlines’ Government representative has confirmed that the DoD has been given the following exemptions which should preclude travelers from encountering additional cost/inconveniences at ticketing and check-in counters. The exemptions apply to the following fares: a. GSA City Pair fares for Military and DoD travelers on Official orders b. Military members traveling on discounted leisure "military leave fares" provided by carriers. (Military personnel on leave alone are not exempt, but must be traveling using this specific type of fare, as opposed to a discounted fare from web, i.e. Orbitz, Expedia, etc) For clarification, exemptions to this policy do not apply to the following: a. Anyone traveling on a regular or discounted commercial fare b. Military personnel on leave alone are not exempt, but must be traveling using the specific "military leave fare" offered by the airlines, as opposed to a discounted fare from the web i.e. Orbitz, Expedia, etc Passengers are authorized "carry on" baggage that meet the dimensions of the template provided at the airport check-in and TSA ID check at no additional cost. Should someone clear security with oversized luggage they will be sent back to the ticket counter to check luggage and re-clear TSA Security. Gate agents do not handle monetary transactions and will not collect the bag fee. If the traveler was within size/number of pieces, boarded the plane, and needed to have a bag gate checked based on no space on the aircraft, there will be no charge, and the gate agent/flight attendant will courtesy check the bag. Due to the constantly changing travel environment, travelers should check with airlines before completing travel orders to assure adequate funding. Travelers are encouraged to obtain as much check-in information as possible from their airline prior to proceeding to the airport. Gawain 0 #2 June 17, 2008 They aren't even the first to do this dude...hate to break it to you. I just heard an ad on the radio from Southwest that they have not added any additional fees at this time. Just blame the oil companies...that'll make you feel better...edit to add: when you check in, if you show your govt ID and ask if they can waive the fee, the gate/check agent might be able to help you. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! Believe it or not, we're on the same page, but psychologically, if they keep the air fare tickets suppressed, then it puts more control in the consumer about what they bring, and thus what they finally pay for their trip...sort of...So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! millertime24 8 #5 June 17, 2008 Understandable, but what I meant was when you go to buy the ticket you should know if your going to bring bags or not and if you are then you could just say that and voila included in the ticket. Not having to shell out more $$ after the fact. Thats all I'm saying.Muff #5048

Just wait until they start asking how much you weigh...there was an article not long ago that some airlines are mulling that idea - passengers and cargo = cargo, period. kingbunky 3 #8 June 17, 2008 travel light, pack right, carry everything on. onebag.com. you'll spend a bit more time at security, but save it on the other end when you walk out the door and everyone else waits, sometimes in vain, for their luggage. of course, if you're travelling with a rig, that changes things.
