NewGuy2005 53 #1 June 17, 2008 Just got a new Samsung 46" six series HDTV plus a Samsung surround sound system. I've got the cable signal going from the cable box to the surround sound system amplifier via an HDMI cable. I've got the DVD signal going from the DVD player into the surround sound system via a component video cable The surround sound system amplifier is connected to the TV via a single HDMI cable. The cable signal works great but I can't get the DVD to play on the TV. I think I am getting the signal from the DVD player to the surround sound system because the display indicates a Dolby signal plus it shows the speakers which should be working. The problem is that there is no sound or video. I'm fairly sure that I'm selecting the correct input sources for both the Surround sound and the TV. Could the problem be that I'm flowing the signals through the amplifier first? Should I run the signals to the TV first and just run the sound to the surround sound amplifier? pirana 0 #2 June 17, 2008 Can you send the video signal from the DVD player directly to the TV/monitor; and send the audio signal separately from the DVD player to the surround amplifier? I don't think you want to send the sound signal thru the TV." . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
bigway 4 #3 June 17, 2008 Seeing you are only running the dvd through component you should just be running it straight to your tv. Then run a optical audio cable from the samsung to your amp for surround sound. I have a very similar set up. If you want to run it through your amp first then run it via hdmi. .Karnage Krew Gear Store .
bigway 4 #4 June 17, 2008 if your surround amp has multiple hdmi inputs then run it through them and then hdmi to your tv. If not run to your tv and then optical to the amp. or run the picture of the dvd to your tv and the component audio to your amp. .Karnage Krew Gear Store . I think that's what I'll do until I get a BluRay player with HDMI outputs. Thanks everyone!!
bigway 4 #6 June 17, 2008 Buy a PS3. it has the best bluray player as i think it is the only one that connects to the internet at the moment. It is also fantastic to use as a wireless media server. I never use my PS3 for games, only blu-ray, and to stream movies i download off the net to my 46 inch tv. It also makes the quality of the downloaded movies a bit better and it can do 1080i on dvds. .Karnage Krew Gear Store .
klafollette 0 #7 June 17, 2008 Component video is an analog signal, no audio. HDMI is Digital video and audio. Most receivers will not do an analog/digital conversion, so that you can feed component video into the receiver, along with analog or digital (toslink optical or SPDIF Coax) audio, and have the receiver combine them into a HDMI signal going to your TV. hell, my old surround receiver doesn't have component or HDMI, so I run all my video signals direct to my TV; HDMI, Component HD and composite NTSC. The receiver only handles the audio from each source. Then I use a Logitech Harmony programmable macro remote to switch both the receiver audio and TV Video at the same time, as I switch sources.
