lippy 918 #1 June 18, 2008 I'm totally used to the ATMs where you swipe your card then take it out of the machine and do your business. I've actually jokingly made fun of friends in the past for forgetting their cards in the machines where you leave your card inside till after the transaction. Well today in Lima airport I forgot my card. I didn't even think about it till I got to Iquitos and went to pay for dinner. I checked my statement and the fuckers came along and took out $400. I got my old card canceled and tomorrow I'll get a new one on the way to my parents' place in Canada so they can send it to me when I know I'll be in one place for a few days. I'll also have to talk with the fraud department at the bank tomorrow. I don't think that's under their fraud coverage...If it was, it'd be too easy for people to try to scam a few hundred $$$ outta the bank. I'm glad my bank has a $500 daily ATM limit and that they didn't go off to buy more shit after. I'm not sure if they were able to complete more transactions after I put my pin in the first time or if somebody was watching and then came right up behind me. I consider myself pretty heads up and I used to think anybody who did something like this had to be an airhead, but I guess I stand corrected (on one of the aforementioned points)I got nuthin

bluepill 0 #4 June 18, 2008 Thats bad. I work in a bank and here in the UK most ATM's have a time limit on in-action when a card is in the machine. If there is no action after a certain period the card is with-held, so that no further transactions can take place. This also occurs if the card is left in the slot. Most ATM's will grab the card and with-hold it. It also does it with money if you dont take it from the slot. You may want to check if the card has been witheld by the ATM. If it has, then you can at least prove to your bank what has happened. If you have been with your bank for a while and your account activity is ok, then you may be able to negotiate with them to recover some of the lost money. Most bank's will sympathise with your situation. For instance a little known fact here in the UK is that, say I went into a bank and took out £1000. And then shortly after I get robbed and the money is taken off me, well providing I report it to the police, the bank would normally reimburse me the full £1000. Talk to your bank, see if you can get them to share the loss. It's worth a try. BP
Scoop 0 #5 June 18, 2008 I worked for a bank too. I seem to rememebr that any claims below a certain amount were refunded without any investigation as it takes too much time and money to look into things. I'm sure you'll be alright
MikeJD 0 #6 June 18, 2008 In my experience (in the UK), the machines where you have to manually insert and retrieve your card also tend to be the ones whose operators charge you for transactions. So there are two reasons to avoid them like the plague.

The feed mechanism for the cards has virtually jack-shit to do with it in that regard.Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. POPS 9708 , SCR 14706

lippy 918 #9 June 19, 2008 Well they put the claim into the system this morning and I should know within 48 business hours. The chick on the bank's claim line was kind of a bitch, but I understand her sarcasm given that I've given the same shit to people in the past for pulling this shite. The good thing is that Peru is littered with branches of my Canadian bank, so I can write them a check to get my visa way in the black and not worry about interest from living off of it until I get my new bank card from Chase. Still a pain in the ass and losing $400 isn't something I normally do without at least a hangover to show for it. I got nuthin
