Name of helmet

Recommended Posts

I do tandems with a Gath, it's a good audible holder, nothing else....... it wuld afford very little protection. Basically it's a kayaking helmet.
Pete Draper,

Just because my life plan is written on the back of a Hooter's Napkin, it's still a life plan.... right?

Gaths make decent "dirt alert" holders and will protect your "do", but have negligible impact attenuation and only slightly more penetration protection than the leather hats worn by the old farts.
Gath's saving grace is that they will earn you lots of bling points on some DZs.

So do you personally like it then?

Well it hasn't failed me yet (knocking on wood). But then it hasn't proven itself either. I dunno, I guess it serves its purpose like just about any other skydiving helmet, it holds an audible and prevents little dings to the skull. It was my first helmet, and it cost $80.

So, do I like it? Sure, but just because I have no reason not to.

The one in the pic is the Gath with the pull down visor. I've jumped them, and the visor isn't great for everyday jumping. It does look cool as hell.

I use a standard Gath for a general skydiving helmet, and I like it. It's light, low profile, and provides good coverage, and mine fits me well.

The snug fit means an audible may not fit inside the helemt. I've cut a Pro Track sized hole in the side of mine, and added some palstic strips to keep the Pro Track from popping out. The good news is that the plastic is easy to work with.

If you're in the market for an open face helemt, it's a good choice. It's also on the cheap side, and I've had mine for years, and it still works great.

And Gath makes a clear plastic audible holder that mounts easily to the outside with two drilled holes. A ProTrack or Dyter fits perfectly. I don't remember where I found mine, I don't think its on their website, but if you search you'll find it.

The Gath hat works fine especially for the price.

If you're looking for carbon fibre penetration/impact proofing you're gonna pay heaps more .

Some super strong helmets can actually cut your head off or slice into your neck in some types of accidents.eg if an edge is caught on something.
This is due to some helmets sharp edges and ability to roll/slide around on the head if forced.

The gath won't do this as it is nicely flexible, and close fitting and in general won't roll around on your head if properly fitted .

Surfies have been wearing them for yonks and they've saved many a head from coral strikes.
They are amoungst the closet fitting helmets on the market and this can help avoid some hits as well that a larger helmet which sticks out more could take.

The Gath visors are NOT optically clear but work OK up to a point...and come in clear smoke and coloured and are affordable to replace.
Gath make a specially lined airhat which is fake fleece lined for extra comfort.
They also have special side fittings for audibles available.

The cons? for some reason people just love carbon fibre . The gath is plastic.

PS not a Gath rep but they make a good product that has been much imitated. and they are kinda like pioneers in affordable neat headgear.
