They stand and watch, horrified, when others are oppressed. When the shit hits the fan, the sheep are in total chaos. Wolves live to prey on the sheep. They are aggressive, and violent, and only hunt the sheep for their own good. Then there are the sheepdogs, who, like the wolf, have a capacity for violence. They train, and prepare themselves for the day when things go horribly wrong. They live to protect the sheep from the wolf. There are three kinds of people in the US. Trouble-makers, Do-gooders, and Do-nothings. The trouble-makers have learned that they only get caught 1% of the time. The other 99% of the time they get away with it. Not enough cops, laws that protect anyone under 18 because they "don't know what they're doing", and no one is allowed to shoot you. The do-gooders make the news for all the wrong reasons. Usually, they think they know what the right thing to do is, and after they mess things up further, get thrown in jail, sued and abused in the press. Does it really make sense to do anything and get yourself into trouble? No. The do-nothings have been taught that the system works, when it really doesn't. The most you get from a do-nothing is a phone call or a report of what happened. They hope that the proper authorities will solve the problem, which is just about impossible considering how fast things happen. The best I've ever gotten from cops is a few days later, after filing a report, they come around and ask a few questions. Despite that, the do-nothing path is your best chance of getting out safely! And it's the right choice according to our laws. By doing nothing, you will not get yourself hurt, you will not subject yourself to a lawsuit, and you will not go to jail with everyone else. Probably the best and safest thing to do is pull out your camera phone when you see something happen, and make sure the cops get the video. If you got the license plate on video and some footage of what they did, the authorities can go and pick up the offenders after the fact and the judge can prosecute them based on the video. I have a Blackberry and an iPhone and they both take video - a lot of new phones do. Hopefully the offenders don't see you taking video and try to run you down ...Trapped on the surface of a sphere. simplyputsi 0 #30 June 23, 2008 I only read a few of the posts and i'm not getting into that argument. You seemed to have witnessed first hand what many many many many many many victims of crimes in this country already know. And that is that cops can't fucking help you unless by some magic they happen to be in the same place at the same time you are being victimized. Plus the dispatcher probably barely made it through highschool, and most likely you wre interrupting her myspace browsing. JohnRich 4 #31 June 23, 2008 QuoteThere are three kinds of people in the US. Trouble-makers, Do-gooders, and Do-nothings... Excellent post! This used to be a country of do-gooders who would stand up for each other, even strangers, when they witnessed wrong-doing. As a kid I witnessed some punks come into our cul-de-sac who started tearing up the neighborhood. Fathers quickly got on the phone to other fathers up and down the street, and within seconds, they started marching out of their front doors in unison, from all directions, to confront the punks. The punks were mightily impressed at this show of force, and quickly departed with their tails between their legs. The problem today is that the do-gooders have to act alone, because everyone else is afraid to get involved. This is what the 9-1-1 generation has become. We've been trained from birth that our only obligation to our fellow man is to punch three numbers on a phone, then go back to watching our TV and forget about it. We're taught that citizens are unqualified to help anyone - only government employees are allowed to do that. But they aren't there when they're needed! And when a citizen does dare to step in and try and save someone, they often end up arrested for trying to help, or sued. All of this comes about because of the TV. Instead of sitting around in the evenings talking to neighbors and getting to know and care about them, we retreat to our private homes and live in isolation. We don't know most of our neighbors, and the few we do know, we don't know well enough to want to risk our lives helping them. The world has become shit, and your only response is to be able to take care of yourself, because no one else is going to come help you. Not your fellow citizens, and not the cops. And the same government that isn't there to help you when you need them, passes laws to prevent you from being able to take care of yourself. Thank gosh for skydiving, where we are still a close-knit community that cares about each other, and we are amongst people that we trust and who will take care of us if necessary. The drop zone is a small island of sanity in a big world of shit.

And you would think shots fired would warrant code to be run while in route, apparently not. I will say that it's a shitty job and i'm thankful there are those out there that can do it. I believe they deserve better for what they have to put up with, and I doubt it will ever happen. JohnRich 4 #41 June 23, 2008 Quote That pretty much sums up the world we live in over here too Well, that's the big city perspective anyway, where there are so many people that everything is impersonal. Small town life is quite different, and people still care and help one another at a personal level. And in the big cities, people band together just like we do as skydivers, to get into smaller groups where they care for and look out for each other: Elks, Masons, Veterans of Foreign Wars, churches, and all kinds of other clubs. It's human nature to seek out that kind of close trust in others. When you can't find it in the big cruel world, you find it on a smaller scale. For us, skydiving does the trick. Quakers, for example, as part of their religion, don't believe in insurance. If one of their member's house burns down, they all combine their resources, get together, and build them a new one. Everyone sacrifices a little bit, to help their neighbor rebuild. That's the best kind of "insurance" of all.
shropshire 0 #42 June 23, 2008 It's a creeping issue. We live in a small town and know very few people in our street. People commute to work (so leave early and arrive home late). It's the curse of the modern age. We know our elderly neighbours (because we make time for each other) and people with dogs (because we share an interest) everyone else we know on nodding terms only. . (.)Y(.) AggieDave 6 #45 June 23, 2008 That camera on top of the traffic light is typically just used as a motion sensor to trip the lights for traffic. They have no film, do not record and are not monitored by anyone. There are only a few communities in TX that have red light cameras (thank god, I am 100% opposed to those), but those are typically just snap shots.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." I am very impressed with you musical melody of la,la,la,la,la,la,la,la,la,la’s……. However, it will soon get quite boring after only a few measures. May I suggest that you emphasize every 4th la with either a “do” or a “da” because this will greatly enhance not only the rhythmic feel, but the harmonic quality of your tune. If you apply the same tag every 8th subdivision, it will indicate an 8 beat, 2 measure phrase which sounds very natural to the human ear. You will find this change especially appealing when dancing or skipping in a big circle in your front or back yard while keeping in mind the spirit of my post!
