Holiday Party alternative???

Recommended Posts

The staff and I are going to pitch to Sr. Management that i/o having a fancy holiday party like in the past (The Biltmore, etc.) we would like to donate to a worthy cause.

Some ideas we are tossing around:

- working a kitchen in a homeless shelter
- donating time / gifts to a neglected/abused child shelter
- donating time / gifts to a transitional living facility
- donating time / gifts to an autism facility

Anyone have any other good ideas???

Adopt a family (or multiple families)... holiday gifts, clothes, grocery store gift cards, etc.

Oh Yeah! :)
A few of the transitional homes that I'm looking at have that program.

Years ago I won a $500 gift certificate at a boogie for the shopping outlets near Elsinore. I went shopping for a family - managed to fill 3 large bags full of clothes, shoes, toys. I had a friend of mine dress up as Santa and deliver the gifts on Christmas Eve. Since we had the costume we continued on Christmas day as well running through the housing projects giving out small toys. OMG, the kids went NUTZ!!!

I suggest keeping it to something that folks actually get together and do together vs. collecting money. At the same time it's nice to do something for others, typically a holiday party/get together, etc. is also a pretty important chance for employees to take a step away from the norm for a few minutes and feel appreciated themselves. Obviously folks will have different levels of interest in the type of activity, so it could be tough.

I spent two years in an AmeriCorps program with the Florida State Parks and some of the best volunteer groups I had come out were companies doing this type of thing. I always worked it so they could spend a morning working (paddling a river cleaning up garbage, re-planting native trees, beach clean-up, etc.) and then had the rest of the day to enjoy the park on their own, often with some kind of cook out, etc. They essentially still had a low key party, but did something to give back to the community at the same time.

Just keep in mind that this type of event is usually meant as a thank-you to employees for a job well done (or for putting up with management :D and you should try to make sure it is still seen in that light. It's a rare person that's going to pipe up and say "no I don't want to work at a soup kitchen, I want MY party!" but I can't imagine there wouldn't be at least few that would like to.

Killing threads since 2004.

Couldn't agree with you more....

In the past we have always had a white elephant gift at the holiday party. Our idea is to take the money we would spend on that gift ($20.00 per couple/guest) and put it towards a gift for someone in need. Then have the company match those donations with a portion of the budgeted amount that would be spent on the holiday party. What ever is left over we would have a small intimate dinner for the employees at someones house, or a small rest.

It is a tough time right now as our company just laid off 10% of our staff, so we definately want to do something nice for us - just not as fancy as we've had in the past, and we want to make a difference.

As far as donating time it will be at each employees discretion if they want to participate - we understand that it's not everyone's cup of tea.

The program you worked in sounds awesome. Those are some great volunteer ideas. I may have to check into that as well.

Thanks!

Have a Jubilee X-mas type thing...just like the above statement, but you have an organization assign you a certain number of families with children and you accept gifts from the community to distribute to the children...It's lots of fun to watch children's faces light up when they see that they are getting gifts for X-mas...:)
