Gawain 0 #1 June 26, 2008 I've spent some time arguing with the gang in Speakers Corner over energy, oil, etc., and one of the things I've brought up in that forum is that one of the ways we as a society can better conserve fuel is to stop looking at it purely from a financial perspective, and bring actual consumption to the forefront. Hearing the macro-consumption numbers as a society does not truly ring home to the decisions we make as individuals. Without getting into the politics and wherefores of energy supplies, an article was recently published which provided a sort of vindication on the mindset I've advocated. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/06/080619142118.htm In short, regardless of whether or not you're car shopping, try adopting a "Gallons Per Mile" approach to some of your driving plans. Doing so achieves two objectives: first it provides a more accurate consumption number (better than MPG) and second it provides an accurate financial estimate as well, based on consumption not a tank fill-up. For example: Traditional thinking -- which saves more gas over 10,000 miles? Improving 34 to 50 mpg or 18 to 28 mpg? It's the latter -- nearly twice as much. New thinking -- Expressed in GPM, over 100 miles, at 18 mpg is 5.5 gal per 100 miles. And 28 mpg is 3.6 gal per 100 miles. 2 gallon difference, $8. More details in the article, but just some food for thought for those wrestling with fuel costs. Truly understanding real consumption numbers will help reduce actual consumption which will translate to reduced cost. Hopefully it'll help those out there that are looking for at least some useful information without the politics, etc. More references: http://www.fuqua.duke.edu/news/mpg/table.pdf http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080619/sc_nm/fuel_efficiency_dcSo I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light!
