XM-Sirius merger approved by justice department

Recommended Posts

That's goo dnews hopefully the FCC stops draggin their feet and approves this.

I would like to see some profit n the stocks.

Once they can stop competing against each other they can pay their bills a bit and invest for us share holders.

Exactly - it still needs FCC approval. But the Justice Department has found that there is no antitrust issue involved with it.

From two competing companies to a monopoly...I fail to see this as positive. I'm betting it will result in a net increase for subscriptions as they are renewed.

The FCC still needs to bless it, and I imagine they will.

That's the thing - it's NOT a monopoly. If I don't like it, I can stick to free radio. Or internet radio.

Monopoly means really that there is no choice. I fail to see that here.

On the other hand, if they are competing against each other there will probably ultimately be a winner and a loser. Resulting in monopoly, and a bunch of subscribers to one perhaps losing their broadcasts, useless hardware, etc.

Instead of competing against each other and terrestrial, XM and Sirius can compete against terrestrial radio.

Exactly.

I'm sure eventually it'll go the way of cable tv.
Remember when Cable didnt have commercials?

This is a good thing. Especially if you have stock in either company.

Soon cable tv will be (in essence) a monopoly.
in Early 2009 there will be no free tv. You can not pick it up with rabbit ears etc.

You will have to buy/rent a box that will bring the signal into your home. So much for the lower class being able to afford cheap entertainment, huh?

they have to GIVE 24 channels to minority programming. Whatever that means.

Why the fuck do they have to GIVE anything to anyone? Fucking NAB lobbyists are just an example of how we don't vote for government anymore we vote for puppets who are bought by big business.

Why would they have to give anything to anyone? My thoughts, exactly! It's a paid subscription, people!!! And if this means that Sirius is going to suck like XM after this merger...I will be yanking my subscription!

Agreed. I really really don't like XM radio. I can't stand fucking commercials and I don't like the way the stations are layed out on XM. None of them make any sense at all. Makes me want to kill myself trying to figure out what station to listen to. On sirius i have like 9 channels that all play music that I like.

I will for sure cancel and go all iPod if this lowers the quality of service that I am used to.

We got Nancy an XM radio for Christmas - So far haven't listened to it enough to swear by, her apartment in Riverside didn't have the southern exposure -
Now that we're in the "new" house in Crystal Lake, we'll see how it goes.

As far as taking music/news to the gym or where ever, I just download it and load it on my MP3. No fuss, no muss, no bucks.

What are you talking about? All they have to do is broadcast a digital signal (vs. analog). The only people who will need a box are the people with old (analog) televisions, and the government is giving out vouchers for those! While I do have cable at home, I already get free hi-def over the little crank-up antenna on my trailer at the DZ and expect that to get better next year, not worse.
