labrys 0 #1 July 1, 2008 Is it me or are a lot of the threads being started lately transforming very rapidly into the kind of childish pooh-slinging and other hateful behavior that happens in youtube comment sections? I know there always have been and always will be those kinds of spats on any forum, but it seems to me that there's an exponential increase in them here. Is it simply that these forums have reached some critical mass membership wise or is it because once a few people start doing it others start to behave the same way? I've noticed that I'm a lot more likely to make a snarky comment than I used to be.Owned by Remi #?

quade 4 #3 July 1, 2008 It goes in stages. When dz.com first started out it was a refreshing alternative to rec.skydiving. As time has gone on, the same types of things that happened there have happened here. Yes, you are correct, there is a "critical mass" component to it. In any group of people, there will be (for the purposes of example only) say 5% that are jerks. If you only have a community of 100 people, then it's fairly easy to keep the 5 jerks in line. As the community grows the percentage of jerks doesn't change, but the volume of material they can produce does. Further, the longer the community exists, the more personally invested people become in it -- even the jerks. Eventually they feel it's their "home" and feel it's their "right" to do in it whatever they please. New people see this behavior and, in an attempt to fit in, emulate it. Older users see the newer ones as "upstarts" that must be taken on as they are a "threat" to their status. So, as the community ages, the "jerkitude" slowly increases. None of this is new. If we all lived in small communities (both real and virtual) we'd all be a lot nicer to one another, but we don't. We live in communities of ever increasing size and anonymity. Both are factors in the increase in assholism.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
PhreeZone 20 #4 July 1, 2008 This has all happened before and it will happen again... The typical flow is that once the snowball starts to roll with more then 3-4 comments it gets out of hand and its usually the same group of people that start the slide and contribute to it growing from a fun jab to an all out flame fest. If the moderators try to do anything to limit the snipes we are accused of "not getting that it was a joke" and being "too controlling". If we take a heavy handed approach to keeping the forums from getting too snarky then everyone is pissed since they can't have any fun anymore and rightfully so. On the other hand if nothing is done you see the results. We've hit situations multiple times in the past that the user base radically changes due to issues that you've hit on such as critical mass, user dynamics and a ton of other factors. The best thing that can be done is to have self control and not post comments that are hateful or would be bordering on personal attacks. If every user was able to do this then the issue would go away on its own. Since its been proven that not everyone can do it then if the users that are able to control themselves do that and we as moderators remove the snowballs before they get rolling the issue can be minimized for the majority of the time.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

downwardspiral 0 #7 July 1, 2008 It's all about posturing and jockying for position within the social hierarchy that is this forum. A person can be genuinely nice all day and their posts will be completely ignored. I know because I'm one of them. Unfortunately the only way to get any attention around here is to either show your boobs or be an ass. Bonus points if you do both. So if you want things to change...stop ignoring the nice people and start ignoring the jerks. But damn it! Don't stop the boobs! www.FourWheelerHB.com
