StreetScooby 5 #1 July 4, 2008 I'm looking for a "calendar" app for my home PC network. My router is a LinkSys, most of the computers are wireless, my machine is a direct connect (...I don't trust wireless). I need to find someway to keep track of all the activities going on in the household. My kids are all computer literate, and they need to input into this app. My wife needs to input into this app. What app can handle this? Personally, I'm morally opposed to anything out of Microsoft, mainly due to security concerns. Are there any others out there that I can use?We are all engines of karma
nigel99 574 #2 July 4, 2008 Hi, I know 1 or 2 people who use Google Calender, http://www.google.com/intl/en/googlecalendar/overview.html It has the advantage that you can see it anywhere and its free.Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived. I have only heard the usefulness from a few consultants who are always on the road and it lets a few people that they have shared with get visibility of their schedule.Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived. StreetScooby 5 #11 July 5, 2008 Quote +1 for Sunbird I use the lighting extension w/ Thunderbird and love it Right now, I'm loving Sunbird. My understanding is Thunderbird will let me and my family actually share a single calendar. Due to my conservative nature, I'm thinking about exporting/importing Sunbird calendars across machines, though exporting a Sunbird calendar seems to be all or nothing. So, if my wife adds some event in September, I might have to write a perl script that strips out the rest of the year (...how does Sunbird manage event UIDs across machines?).We are all engines of karma
Fozz 0 #12 July 5, 2008 Well I haven't had any issues when I set up each event I have a public and a private which Lighting and Sunbird allow you to select when entering the event. You can export as required the "Private" or "Public" calender. You can "I believe" set up individual calenders and sort/export by each. Don't know if it helps anyJohn Fosgate "In the end, its always best to choose the hard right over the easy wrong." StreetScooby 5 #13 July 5, 2008 Doesn't Thunderbird require a web server somewhere in the loop?We are all engines of karma
sd-slider 0 #14 July 5, 2008 Quote (...I don't trust wireless). Why not? It's not that much more secure than cable or DSL? Fire up a a sniffer on your feed sometime and take a peek at what's going on around you! Most broadband and DSL pops haven't gone to full switched networks in the neighborhoods yet. Wireless can be effectively implemented with a boatload of security(run the wizard if you have too...) that will require WPK(password) and WEP(passphrase). Most devices now come standard with encryption algorythms. Much more secure than most wired applications.Anvil Brother #69 Sidelined with a 5mm C5-C6 herniated disk... Fozz 0 #19 July 5, 2008 Well it depends on how you like to do things. I use Thunderbird as my email client and Lighting operates INSIDE Thunderbird as an extension so instead of having to open a new program I just select the calender icon and all the function of Sunbird inside Thunderbird without having to have another program open. If you don't use Thunderbird, Sunbird is a great Standalone calender app It works great for me but I'm a long way from super geekdum (said with admiration) But I'm a free software guy too. I LOVE OPEN SOURCE !!!!!!! I'm NOT a programmer and I use OPEN OFFICE, Thunderbird, Firefox, AUDACITY, GIMP, GNU CASH, INKSCAPE, to name a few John Fosgate "In the end, its always best to choose the hard right over the easy wrong." sd-slider 0 #22 July 6, 2008 Quote Quote What's on the other side of the router? So, you're saying I can't trust the router? Not always....all the router does is route, regardless of the content(unless you are filtering out the riff-raff...). You may be confusing the term router with firewall. Either way, wireless can be safely secured and provide much more convenience and flexibilty to your home network. Also keep in mind that unless you are a bank, gov't office, or other high profile establishment, most people could care less about you and your packets.
