Thunderbow 1 #1 January 13, 2006 I just bought a used canopy that smells like cigarette smoke. Any ideas? I thought of putting it in the dryer on regular (cool) air with a few dryer sheets. Can't jump it now to help because I'm in Michigan and it is nasty out.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Lord, let me be the person my dog thinks I am. Remster 30 #2 January 13, 2006 I'd let it air out in a room or something like that. I wouldnt trust the machine. Nylon shouldnt hold on to the smell should it?Remster
GravityGirl 0 #3 January 13, 2006 I don't think the dryer is a good idea. Hang it outside in fresh air. (Out of direct sunlight) You may have to wash and hang dry. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Peace and Blue Skies! Bonnie ==>Gravity Gear!
kenneth21441 0 #4 January 13, 2006 Pat, hello, my fellow michiganer... I am sorry that you came across someones rig that is filled with this stuff. First I would suggest a good solid wash in warm water for a few hours. Using some liguid detergent (no bleach)...of course remove the reserve and main...etc.. just the harness/ container...no ADD... id say after two or three washes and rinses. the smell should be down graded. let dry out of direct sunlight. a dark room with fan help.... Do not place in the cloths dryer.. On the Main / reserve not much I can say here. Just have a rigger inspect it before April when the Dz's open back up...... I hope that this assist you and if I can be of any help please feel free to contact me... thanks, Ken,.Kenneth Potter FAA Senior Parachute Rigger Tactical Delivery Instructor (Jeddah, KSA) FFL Gunsmith

Thunderbow 1 #7 January 13, 2006 Looks like about all I can do now is what I am doing which is hanging it in the garage with a fan blowing on it. I only have the canopy to deal with. Hey Ken - I grew up and lived in Sturgis most of my life. Used to jump in Coldwater years ago. Mostly jumped at Dennis Johnson's (RIP) place in Gobels. Thanks to all for interest in my dilemma.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Lord, let me be the person my dog thinks I am.

Good luck with that. That's what I did too and the only way I finally got rid of the smell was when I sold the canopy . DAMN cigarette smoke! Don't people know that shit can kill you!?!? Vectracide 0 #11 January 14, 2006 Hey masterrig, I have the same question as one of the other guys. Will Frebreeze cause any harm to a canopy or container? ------------------------------ Controlled and Deliberate.....

masterrig 1 #15 January 14, 2006 There is 'some' alchohol in Febreze but, the amount should have no ill effects on Nylon. The other ingredients are 'inert'. The alchohol could cause the material to become 'dry' 'crisp'. If, the weather were warmer where he is, I'd say jump the smell out of it. Chuck
Scoop 0 #16 January 14, 2006 A few 12k' hop n pops should sort that! I know what you mean though, I hate that smell! Must be frustrating.

HydroGuy 0 #19 January 14, 2006 Loosely pack it in a trash bag with some cedar chips and let it sit a week... Nothing in cedar chips that will hurt anything When it works, give me creditGet in - Get off - Get away....repeat as neccessary
CrazyL 0 #20 January 14, 2006 Hmm. Cedar chips smell great too. Do you think the cedar chips absorb smells as well, like baking soda does in a fridge? Have you really tried that? Cedar chips would overpower the smoke smell i'd think.

I don't think cedar chips absorb the smells so much as they would cover them up... if you go with cedar I'd recommend aromatic cedar, I believe it's also called spanish cedar (been a while since I worked with it so I could be mistaken)....The only naturals in this sport shit thru feathers... CrazyL 0 #22 January 14, 2006 Ya , your right about spanish cedar, very aromatic. I'd think the cedar smell would cover up the smoke smell too. Not necessarily remove the smell from canopy. Smoke tar really sticks to things. Hell, maybe enough smoke tar on canopy would make an F111 canopy like ZP!

PeteS 0 #24 January 15, 2006 You might try baby powder and then a vacuum cleaner.
riggerrob 643 #25 January 15, 2006 All those sweet=smelling perfumes only help a little to mask the stench. Better to hang it in a breezy hangar for a few days, just keep it out of direct sunlight.
