javelin1 0 #26 July 10, 2008 actually the chassis are made of chromoly steel, NOT aluminum and titanium. but wouldnt have made a difference. the throttle was hung wide open and made the crash that much worse.with the energy involved in the sudden deceleration when he hit the pole, he probably died instantly, at least i hope so. a friend of mine is working with "Nitro Nick " Boninfante on some new , parachute technology that would have had a better chance of surviving the explosion&fire.interestingly enough, the 2 of them had produced some modifications to the existing drag chute configurations (some 17 years ago) that could have altered the outcome of this unfortunate accident. NHRA (at the time)basically told them to go fuck themselves...........
DavidB 0 #27 July 10, 2008 One thing a lot of funny car crews (or is it all the crews?) have installed since the incident is a device which opens the parachutes if the burst panel on the body pops. IMHO, tradition be damned! Shortening the track to 1000' is a good first step in making the nitro classes safer. Personally, I think they should only race those classes 1/8 mile. When the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.
