normiss 900 #1 July 17, 2008 So after dining in a dive with one of my bestest friends last week...and no, it was not very good actually - except the beer was very cold and the conversation was wonderful....this past week I've been on vacation and went to a few very nice places to eat...so I gots to thinking.... Dive? Nice place? Depends? I seem to really like the dive type places, especially for certain ethnic foods...the quality of food can be much tastier. Nice places are just too pretentious sometimes. The nice places this past week...one of them was....over-priced, decent food but not THAT good...the other was FABULOUS! But the dives were also damn fine...and FUN! and one other thing...you can keep your silly Sleep Number bed...I don't care for those either. reminded me of a soft sided water bed...only less comfortable. Vskydiver and I would rather eat street vendor food in Venice than a 5 star meal in Tukwila ( a mall destination outside of Seattle). On one of our last anniversaries, we were all dressed up to go to a musical. I told her I could take her anywhere in town for dinner that night. She said she didn't like expensive meals, and had me take her to our favorite Irish pub for shepherd's pie and happy hour beers. Now that's a great woman. futuredivot 0 #8 July 17, 2008 As someone who both travels and eats a lot (come on twardo-you can;t walk away from this one) the hole in the wall joints have the best real food. But it's hit or miss. popsjumper 2 #9 July 17, 2008 I have to 'fess up.I voted the Ramen Noodles. I'm not much, very little actually, for the clique joints...neither dive nor 5-star. Ramen noodles at home is more enjoyable than some place where I don't feel comfortable...price is not the issue. The bitch is you have to go there to see if you're going to be comfortable there or not. Ah, such is life. But I gotta say, one of my fondest memories is of a hole-in-the-wall place where "dive" would be complimentary...good bands, good service, good atmosphere...just all-around good vibes. My reality and yours are quite different. TrophyHusband 0 #15 July 17, 2008 the problem i've found with fine dining is that they do a perfect job of preparing crappy food. salads are usually the worst. i realize that they are trying to be different and sophisticated, but often times the food just doesn't taste good. there are exceptions though, like a perfectly cooked fillet mignon with a good bernaise and a glass of cabernet. warpedskydiver 0 #16 July 17, 2008 There have been quite a few fancy retaurants I have eaten at, and sometimes been dissapointed. There have been a greater number of small places, where expectations were not very high, but when the food was served I was amazed. YMMV in a three year period in the late 1990's I had to entertain some clients by going out to eat. IIRC I accumulated over 35k in dinner receipts

rhys 0 #18 July 17, 2008 I prefer a nice home cooked meal, you can choose what goes in there, you can emit the things you don't like, usually is it cheaper and my fiance is more appreciatice if I cook it. why was this not an option?"When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix
Dumpster 0 #19 July 17, 2008 Like others, a 5-star place is nice when the food is worth the expense. I've been some dives where the food would blow away some $200 - plate places. I hate going to a nice place and paying high bucks for mediocre food. Best is when you go to a hole-in-wall and find great food. Nancy and I love finding new places to eat, weather a dive or more upscale. We have a French restaurant nearby that has to be one of the areas best-kept secrets. Outstanding food and service, and fairly reasonbly priced. Easy Does It

Dive? Nice place? Depends? It really depends for me, what my mood is. I have eaten some crazy things in the last two years from street vendors to 5 star. I have to admit that some evenings i just want to be pampered at dinner. With 5 stars places, it really isnt the food you go for, its the whole dining experience. The presentation, the wine, the service and of course dressing up can make you feel better to sometimes. But then White Castle at 4am is just what the doctor ordered. I seem to really like the dive type places, especially for certain ethnic foods...the quality of food can be much tastier. Nice places are just too pretentious sometimes. I think you need to open your mind a little more, Food is an art. Yes taste buds are the final critic, but the whole experience is about trying things and taking in the whole experience. Finer resteraunts usually use different things and actaully prepare the salad just before you eat. Just one mans opinionSo i just broke up with this woman who wasn't even my girlfriend!
