VTmotoMike08 0 #1 July 18, 2008 "Three people check into a hotel. They pay $30 to the manager and go to their room. The manager finds out that the room rate is $25 and gives $5 to the bellboy to return to them. On the way to the room the bellboy reasons that $5 would be difficult to split among three people so he pockets $2 and gives $1 to each of the three people. Now, each person paid $10 and got back $1. So they paid $9 each, totalling $27. The bellboy has $2 totalling $29. Where is the remaining dollar?" Be back in the AM to check out replies. Like most riddles, its not that hard and I have the answer. Don't know the original source though, copied it from a friend.
iluvtofly 0 #2 July 18, 2008 This is really bugging me. And I know as soon as I see the answer I'll hate myself even more because it'll be obvious.
pyrodude 0 #3 July 18, 2008 They paid $27 for a $25 room, a difference of $2, which ended up in the bellboy's pocket. There is no missing dollar.
woady 0 #4 July 18, 2008 The math in the riddle is not balanced. Its not that there is a missing dollar but the story teller got the math confused. Its misleading riddle. 25+2+3 = 30 So what did I win?You know what's similar between Cops and Firefighters? They both wanna be firefighters.
nate25 0 #5 July 18, 2008 good job you subtract the $2 at the end instead of adding it
skittles_of_SDC 0 #6 July 18, 2008 like they said. there is no dollar missing. the math just makes it look like its missing.
Samurai136 0 #7 July 18, 2008 The math is wrong. plays off bad accounting... 25/3= 8.333333333333333333 equal share. Equal refund is 1.6666666666667 X3= 5 Belhop is keeping 0.666666666667 X 3= 2 "Buttons aren't toys." - Trillian Ken

His second favorite joke was: I used to be an old Indian fighter but I had to give it up. I ran out of old Indians to fight. It didn't take us long to catch on to my Uncle's favorite: (Touching your forehead) This is a chicken. (Touching your nose) This is a pullet. (Touching your chin) This is a rooster. (Touching your nose again) Oh, what did I say this was? And yes...he would pull it.My reality and yours are quite different. I think we're all Bozos on this bus. The111 1 #12 July 18, 2008 QuoteSo they paid $9 each, totalling $27. The bellboy has $2 totalling $29. Where is the remaining dollar? You're adding the wrong amounts. Yes, they paid a total of $27 (the hotel has $25 and the bellboy has $2... 25+2=27). They still have a total of $3 (1 each, refunded from the bellboy). 27+3=30. The 2 you're adding to 27 is already part of the 27. The "lie" is in bold... the first part of the sentence is true... he does have $2... but it does not create any sort of "total" $29 as suggested.www.WingsuitPhotos.com
VTmotoMike08 0 #13 July 18, 2008 See I told ya it wasn't that hard. I will admit that it took me a little while after the first time that I heard it too. Didn't know it had been posted here years ago.
happythoughts 0 #14 July 18, 2008 This is a "perspective" riddle. Pick a person and see if the numbers add up. The riddle is caused by intentionally confusing the numbers. From the peoples standpoint, they paid 9x3 = $27 for the room. From the managers standpoint, they paid $25. The bellboy had $2 as change from the managers transaction. The $27 is the amount from the guests view. The problem is described as: initial bill 30 final bill -27 bellboy -2 To make the flaw obvious, what if the bellboy scams them and keeps the whole $5 and returns none of it. initial bill 30 final bill -30 bell boy -5 Huh? Negative 5?
