shropshire 0 #1 July 21, 2008 (Sorry JohnWe've just returned from our summer holiday in the Alps and thought that I'd share a few photos of our walks. This series is from a wonderful walk that we did to a mountain hut set next to the Le Tour glacier (Chamonix). The day didn't start well with very low cloud... but that made the first view of the glacier rather dramatic!! The Red Ice is caused by sand that is carried on the wind from Morocco!! Clicky (.)Y(.) Feel free to appropriate that title any time, as long as I get to see the photos. Amazing views! What was the elevation there? How high did you hike to get to the hut? Isn't that helicopter resupply kind of expensive?
shropshire 0 #5 July 21, 2008 Thanks John. The hike started at around 2000 meters (we left the car at 1450 and took a telecabine up through the rain). Then the reguge is at 2707. I'd guess that is expensive to resupply by helicopter but they dont need to fly far and there are a lot of huts that are resupplied on the same day - The Tour De Mont Blanc walk is very popular, so they have a lot of visitors. P.S I'm planning to do "The Tour" TMB next year (my 50th summer!!), so I'm researching, planning and training. (.)Y(.) flyangel2 2 #6 July 21, 2008 That's my kind of hiking!May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds. - Edward Abbey

Let's see, 700 meters elevation gain, that's about 2,300'. Yep, that's definitely a healthy climb and hike, but not one that will kill you. Of course, that can depend upon the steepness of the slope too. At any rate, that sounds like a nice hike. And having a place to stay comfortably overnight up there sounds wonderful.
