where the hell did my music go?

Recommended Posts

IIRC, your music library should be in C:\document and settings\*username*\My Music (for XP).

Vista, I believe, is C:\users\*username*\my music

I don't recall exactly WHERE you set the library location - should be in a 'tools' menu, if i remember correctly.

I went ahead and put your problem in bold italics.

All seriousness aside, i hope you find your music. I understand how depressing of a loss that is.

i've already found that file and it has an empty itunes library folder. i just find it hard to believe that all of my music would just dissappear ffrom my computer.

It sounds like your iTunes Library file was corrupted, moved, or deleted.

In your My Music folder (I think; it's been a while since I've had to suffer through Windows), there should be a folder labeled iTunes. In that folder, there should be a folder labeled iTunes Music. It is in that folder that all your iTunes Music exists.

In iTunes (the app, not the folder) go to Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> General and you will see an editable field with the path to your iTunes Music folder. If "Copy files to iTunes Music folder is checked (it is by default) then your music is in that folder.

Also, under the Advanced tab in the iTunes (window) menu, there is an option to "Consolidate Library…", which copies all of the music files on your computer (perhaps excepting .wma files) to your iTunes Music folder. Note that it copies them, it does not move them.

it looks like there is no music on my computer at all. i opened my wife's itunes and all of her music is gone too. i lost a harddrive a few years ago and it took weeks to get all of our music loaded back on, so i bought another harddrive and backed it all up for just just an occasion, but i can't find any music on that harddrive either. this sucks. now i'll have to dig up the thread about putting music from the ipod back onto the computer. that's fine for me since all of my music is on my ipod. it sucks for my wife since only about a third of her fits on her ipod. i wonder hoe this could happen?

Before you hook your iPod up to your computer, I would 1) make sure you don't have malware that erases music files and 2) search your hard drive (ideally from a Terminal window in Linux, which every good Windows user should keep installed on at least an external drive) for .mp3, .acc, .wma, etc. files.

I've never used the Consolidate Library… feature in iTunes. It's possible that my understanding of what it does is incorrect. It may only move music already in your library to the iTunes Music folder. However, if "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" is checked, then all the music should have been there.

Edit: Consolidate Library only affects files already in your library, which is none in your case. It also appears that iTunes may not copy files to iTunes Music by default in Windows.

Do you notice the extra space available on your drives? If not, the music should still be there.
