The Prisoner

Recommended Posts

I just read in TV Guide that AMC is remaking "The Prisoner." Jim Caviezel is #6 and Ian McKellan is #2.

I was a little young to catch the original when it was on - it was probably past my bed time. :$ I never saw a single episode in syndication either.

I heard a lot about it, and look forward to watching the new one. The original is on DVD so I maybe I will rent it.

I bought the DVD set when it came out a few years ago.

FYI #2 was played by a different actor/actress in every episode.

Mmmm . . . -every- episode?

I could swear that a few of them did a few in a row.

In any case, the original series was awesome with the exception of the final episode which was kind of forced and not really what they wanted. Loved the premise. Will be very interested to see how the movie comes out. If it strays from the original look and feel or if, god forbid, they decide to use a different location than the original series for "The Village" I'm going to cry.

I'll allow them an upgrade to "Rover" though . . . even as a kid I thought that was kinda lame.

I am curious to see how they play out certain aspects of the story. The original was mostly a psychological drama (#6 usually "won" by tricking #2 or driving him insane), whereas I can see how somebody might want to turn it more into an "action" thing.

From what I've read, Portmeirion got so sick of being inundated by Prisoner fans, that it would surprise me if they agreed to go through it again.

I never saw the final episode until I bought the boxed set. I agree it was a disappointment. I've read that UK Prisoner fans were ready to lynch the parties responsible for the final episode.

Looks like there were 2 actors who played #2 more than once:

John, I have the entire original series on DVD. I'll loan it to you if you promise not to foment discord during another film festival. :P

It's interesting to note that this series was born out of McGoohan's "Danger Man" series. McGoohan was asked at the "Danger Man" series wrap party what a secret agent does after resigning. Of course, it was meant as a question regarding McGoohan's own career choices after "Danger Man", but it got him thinking about a series based on that exact premise: what happens when you know too much to be left alone and people on both sides of the fence want what you've got?

That freaking weather balloon, Rover, scared the crap out of me when I was younger. I'll be interested to see what AMC does with this gem.

FREE BIRD!

I just couldn't resist. Next year you need a kick ass sound system that is louder that Larry Lizard and people will have no choice but to listen. Maybe I can help with the sound system.

I would love to watch it so I will take you up on the loan. I will be at RPC this afternoon, but any time works.

I remember a few times exiting a CASA where before exit I would turn back to the other jumpers and do the Prisoner Salute and say "..'be seeing you!" just before jumping out.

Probably no one else got it.:P

so, will they use all new scripts & storyline? Or is it actually a re-make of the original storyline?

(Did anyone see the Simpsons version of The Prisoner? One of those white weather balloons is coming over the ocean to attack them, and Homer just pops it with a fork. :D)

You know, "Rover" was originally supposed to be a robot, but when they went to film, it sank to the bottom of the bay so they had to come up with a new version of "Rover".

Maybe "Danger Man" was the British name for the show, but I remember it as "Secret Agent" - with the Johnny Rivers song for the theme. It used to be on Saturday nights, right after "Get Smart". I must've been in the 6th grade back then. So when "Secret Agent" folded, I locked right into The Prisoner in the summer of '68 (12 years old and nothing better to do). It ran as a summer replacement series.

I hope these people know what they're doing. It sounds like they've got a good cast, but no telling what the writers will do. I hope they have a good imagination, because the one thing they will never be able to convey is the sixties British pop feeling. To Americans at least, Brit pop in the sixties had a very strange and campy feel that took some getting used to - but then you liked it because it was so different. The original "Avengers" series with Patrick McNee and Diana Rigg would be another example - and a warning, because a recent remake film really butchered that wonderful show.

I just finished disc 4 of 10 and this has got to be one of the strangest shows I've ever seen. Too weird for me and I love sci-fi and story telling but this one is strange. I ended up canceling the rest of them.:S
