SpeedRacer 1 #1 August 7, 2008 Aug3-8, 2008. I am here in Mexico City to present our group's research. I had a poster presentation and a brief talk, which I just finished. It went great! The opening ceremonies were on Sunday night. There was a bunch of AMAZING dance perfomances from the Mexico Folkloric Ballet. I'll bet someone has posted them on YouTube by now. This is different from other conferences I've attended, which were mostly other scientists. The AIDS Conference has scientists, but it also deals with social issues, etc. Outside of the Centro Banamax conference center is the "Global Village" setup, which features displays, perfomance art, and exhibits from all sorts of people & organizations associated with the fight against AIDS. Some pretty wild shit is going on here. Occasionally you get chanting protesters marching around, protesting this or that government's lack of response to the AIDS crisis, or protesting against discrimination, etc etc. Also, I've never been to a conference where they're constantly handing you condoms all the time. SpeedRacer 1 #3 August 7, 2008 Thanks! On tuesday I was walking in the global village tent and this Mexican guy hands me a double-coupon, and says in a Cheech Marin voice, "Heeey, here's a coupon for a coffee and a shot of tequeeelah!" So I go there & have one of each. As I'm walking through the crowd I got handed anouther coupon, so I went back, wondering what tequila and coffee have to do with fighting AIDS, but I wasn't complaining. I saw this Mexican woman pour her shot of tequila into her coffee & drink it. I'd never heard of that. SpeedRacer 1 #5 August 8, 2008 I did my talk on Thursday. Before the session I went to the room where I would speak, and there was a notice taped on the door, dated Wednesday. It was a notice for a discussion that had happened wednesday evening, titled something like "Safe Sensuous Sexuality: Sensuous Techniques that promote Safe Sex for MSM" "WARNING: EXPLICIT SEXUAL CONTENT!" > So I saw this notice on the door & thought, oh great. What the hell kind of people are going to show up at my talk? I'm here to talk about HIV replication in macrophages, and the room's going to be filled with fruity-looking guys waiting for me to tell them how to give a good handjob.
