Zep 0 #5 July 13, 2008 Last December when the guy came to install the card swipe machine I asked him for a manual one as a back up an he told me that they didn't use them any more. Our telephone system is from an antenna not land lines, it's usually 99% reliable, guess they didn't foresee a lightning strike taking out the antenna. k_marr08 0 #6 July 13, 2008 even if they don't use it anymore, it's a good investment -- it's saved my friend's restaurant a few times -- you swipe the card and have them sign it for the proper amount, and just input the info into the machine later when the lines are back up -- and you at least have a signature which you staple to the receipt and keep in case of any issues. sorry, obviously it's not gonna help your situation, but like I said...several times it has helped my buddy, so I still think it might be a smart choice."I believe the risks I take are justified by the sheer love of the life I lead" - Charles Lindbergh

Gawain 0 #8 July 13, 2008 You know, if remember to, please give us an update if your patrons do come back and pay. I am very interested in learning if your patrons will return the favor you gave them. I hope they all do, with a generous gratuity. Does your restaurant serve mostly the local community or do you get a lot of tourists? Is your phone company unable to run a land-line to your location? What would it cost your business if you didn't make up any of those receipts, and how long would it take to make it up? It may be worth looking into something like that as a "disaster recovery" type plan. I hope you'll get all your receipts back. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! Zep 0 #9 July 13, 2008 The company that supplies the card swipe machines ( I can't remember what there called in English) takes no responsibility for lost sales due to technical faults. They charge 1.3% of the sale. I prefer when customers pay by direct debit or credit cards as it means I don't have to much cash laying around over the weekend, our local bank doesn't have a deposit box. Zep 0 #10 July 13, 2008 Today lunchtime two came in to pay, they also had lunch, and yes they did leave a tip. We have a mixture of clients, Lunch time it's local families an tourists, in the evening it's mainly groups of younger people who know that if they make lots of noise it doesn't really matter, For them we have a separate dinning room, well insulated, Due to the geographical location of the village the telephone company decided that it was more cost effective to do away with land lines an install antennas on the highest points of the mountain. For us it was a blessing as we now have high speed internet connections, before we had unreliable dial up. I don't think we'll lose any money as my wife is Catalan (private joke) she made a note of the card numbers an when the telephone is back we can verbally make the transaction, We've decided to leave it a couple of weeks to see if they do pay, Personally I think they will as basically most people are honest. I'll post again in a couple of weeks an let you know if they all paid. Gone fishing

madhatter 0 #13 August 10, 2008 Hey Zep, I spent a few days in Balyones a few weeks ago. First time in Catalonia & I had no tourist time (not even to get to Empuria ). All the dishes I had were VERY salty. Is that typical of the regional cuisine or just a 'wrong time wrong place' occurence? A VERY MERRY UNBIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!
