what's important in a relationship?

All right, listen to me.

You pull up right where she is, right?

You go to get out of the car and you lock both doors.

Then get out of the car, and you walk over to her, and bring her over to the car.

Take out the key, put it in the lock, open the door for her, and you let her get in.

Then you close the door for her.

You walk around the back of the car, and you look through the rear window.

If she doesn't reach over and lift up that button so you could get in, dump her.

Just like that?

Listen to me kid, if she doesn't reach over and lift up that button, so you could get in, that means she's a selfish broad, and all you've seen is the tip of the iceberg.

You dump her, and you dump her fast. ;)

recent threads, private discussions and other things brought up this question. i sure have my own ideas, but i'd like to know what the community thinks.

what do you feel makes a relationship work?

what do people need to "invest", what qualities should partners posses (besides sammich-making and beer bringing :P)?

That's great... only one flaw in your plan for me... see the way my car works is that if I use the key to unlock the passenger door... all the doors unlock...

So I guess if she reaches over and locks the door then I know she's a selfish bitch... (that or she's just screwing around with me...) :P

I agree with most things people are saying here. I don't think there is any one good answer to this question though. I think that every relationship is going to be different. What works for one relationship isn't going to work for another. I think every relationship takes a great deal of, not work really, but maybe an emotional effort and is complicated. That is guaranteed.

My one disagreement of what people are saying here is:
I think that you can take two people with different backgrounds, ideas, values, religions upbringing etc. and form a good relationship. I think that because I did it. John and I had nothing in common when we met. We weren't even in the same generation! But when we formed a relationship we came together as one. We sacrificed and compromised for the good of the relationship and for each other because that is what was important to us. We still do. We are one unit together. And all the more happy for it. Things and other people are not as important and we are together.

I also think that keeping the "honeymoon" alive is very important. We got married for a reason! Why does that end when someone decides the honeymoon is over? My honeymoon is NOT over yet. I refuse to let that end. B| I'm having too much fun. Keep the fun going! It helps get you through all the rest.:)

:S Honestly, I don't know how I'd find fulfillmet in a type of relationship like that.

yea, whenever i'm at a party with them (not such a party, mind you), i'm approached by one of them trying to talk me into it.. there's nothing wrong with sexy woman offering all sorts of stuff, i usually pick 'um up on another beer or something. :P last time i said something along the lines of: "in an ideal world, everybody would sleep with anybody else. in real life, i'd have emotional issues with it!". but they're nice people anyway.. sooo.. :D

Size.

Size of your ego, size of your narcissism, size of your genitals . . . it's all about size.

clint, i'm a little disappointed, as someone pointed out earlier, size of breast is really important too! and how much beer they can bring from the kitchen!

I told my boyfriend there are 3 rules to make this relationship work.
1. I am always right
2. everything is his fault
and 3. I am the center of the universe.
He has signed a contract agreeing to these rules, and we have been together for almost 1.5 yrs and not a single fight.

i like your concept of emotional effort. also the different background thingy. i probably had the best relationships with girls from totally different walks of life. maybe, those relationships were the ones i could learn most from!? you shouldnt only be content with your SO, but also nutrition each other with different views on life and lifestyle..

and yea, the honeymoon factor surely is important. again, the best relationships i've had were the ones with the biggest sexdrive. after all, being with someone should be fun. and whats more fun than orgasming with each other.. :o:)B|

1. Common interests help, I think. (there's nothing like someone giving you shit on a Saturday if you want to go golfing, skydiving, etc. and the other wants go shopping together, winefests, etc.). Alone time is good, but when you think you'll spend 24/7 together when you don't have common interests, could cause some tension.

2. Financial equality. (My last relationship ended because I was getting VERY resentful paying for the majority of the "couples" stuff - vacations, etc.) I could go on and on and on with this one.>:(

3, Similar family backgrounds. Who else understands Italian families better than another Roman Catholic Italian?

I forgot to add one more:

4. No bitching when I watch Goodfellas or one of The Godfathers for the 10,000,000th time. No exceptions!

:)
