Do you believe in the existence of American craft beer/ microbrews?

Recommended Posts

Just a rant here:

There's a bar in my town that has a special on some evenings where they advertise on the chalkboard outside "$2.00 Domestic Drafts"

When you get in there you realize that by Domestic Beer they only mean Miller, Anheuser-Busch, or Coors products. They have Yuengling on tap, and they don't even include that!! They also have Sam Adams and Shocktop (an American-made wheat beer), but NOOOOOOO! They don't count as "Domestic"!

(I heard another beer enthusiast complain about this re. a bar in his town. When he complained to the bartender, the bartender said that due to the price, beers like Sam Adams, Sierra Nevada, etc, are considered "Imports">:(>:(>:()

(edited to add: What could be more American than Sam Adams????? They've got American patriotism all over the label!)

WTF??? The American craft beer thing has been going on for over 25 years now!! Isn't it about time we accepted their existence?????

The old meme that American Domestic Beer = Big Watery Bland Pissbeer has been blown away a long, long time ago.

Hell, Anchor Steam has been around since the 1960s!!!

After 25 years, isn't it about time that everyone got with the program??

Why don't they just say "$2.00 Bud/Miller/Coors Drafts" and be honest about it??

They probably call the microbrews imported just so they can justify slapping an extra 2 dollars on the price. IMO if it's a microbrew to begin with, that's enough for me to know I'm going to pay extra for it anyway.

Fair enough, but they should just be honest in their advertising.

It is both dishonest AND unpatriotic to exclude American Craft Beer as "Domestic Beer."

In my opinion, over the last two decades Americans have proven that they are capable of brewing beer with great flavor, color & character. We should have the balls to admit it.

pretty much all bars count bud, bud light miller etc as domestic because it is cheaper than sam adams and some of the others. Since they can charge more for it and they know people will pay there is no reason for them to add it to the list. It is kinda messed up though like you pointed out. Even michelob or amber bock are usually more expensive and not part of the specials.

Look, the bars can charge whatever they please for whichever brand they please.

But I just think that after 25 years we should be able to snap out of the old "domestic/import = cheapshit beer/good beer" mentality.

I had this same argument with one of my buddies. He complained that the only good beer is a nice light domestic brew. I said I like light domestic brews as well. I brought him a Deschutes Mirror Pond. He bitched that it wasn't domestic. I guess Oregon is no longer apart of the USA.

man I got get out of Oklahoma a.k.a beer purgatory!;)

it's bullshit. there are other alternatives out there that they could use instead of calling domestic beer "import".

They do. Some of the more self-aware joints, like divot said, have started using "Premium" as the shorthand for "beers those dickhead frat boys at the next table don't buy." The particular bartender quoted in your case study was simply retarded.

Don't worry, when I open my place, the sign outside will read:
"Two-for-one pisswater drafts EVERY Tuesday!"
I guarantee we'll make a killing.

Oh, and just to share the pain and fuel your next rant: The other day I was at my favorite outdoor waterfront saloon and I watched a young, attractive woman order a $14 pitcher of Newcastle for herself and her visibly dickish boyfriend.

Then, because it was warm outside, she came back to the bar and secured a BAG OF ICE TO PUT IN IT!!

If it costs more to produce, should it be priced higher to recoup? Or for that matter, if the market is willing to pay more, why can't they charge more to maximize ROI? Nobody is trying to defraud. The bars don't expect you to think that Bertha's Bloomer Drippings from Podunk, IN is imported-merely that it's on a different price list. If that price is more that you're willing to pay, buy cheaper beer. If a better beer is worth it to you, pay tier two prices and deal.

And you should know that starting any post with Billy's right, or any variation of that is a bad idea:P

Sorry, it's America. The macro breweries spend millions and millions of dollars convincing the American public that their products are beer. When was the last time you saw a commercial for Sierra Nevada?

True story... I went to a restaurant that used to brew their own beer, pretty good beer at that. Not only had they torn the brewery down, they'd gone clueless. I asked the waiter what they had on tap, and one of the beers he rattled off was 'Sierra Nevada'. I kindly informed him that Sierra Nevada was brewer that had many styles of beer, and asked which one they had on tap. No Clue.

We just don't live in a nation of beer drinkers.

I think that's the OP's complaint, that to advertise domestic beers for $2 then not sell them for $2 IS fraud.

And he's got a point! Sam Adams IS a domestic beer, just a much as any of the BMC beers. If they advertise 'domestic beers', they should deliver domestic beers. ALL domestic beers... Otherwise they should just advertise Bud/Miller/Coors!

don't you mean "$2.00 fizzy yellow piss water"?

i feel your pain, Shiner is brewed an hour from my house but everywhere in Texas it's considered an import. worse yet, the St. Arnold's brewery is closer and it's usually more than Shiner.

life's too short to drink cheap beer.

I live very near (especially in Texas terms) to Shiner, TX. You know, where Shiner beer is brewed. Well even close to where its brewed its charged as a import beer at literally every restaurant and bar in that part of Texas.

I did, though, find one liquor store that on occasion has Left Hand Brewery beer on hand. I'm going to have to enjoy more of that starting tomorrow when I arrive in Longmont!
