Dollars and Cents

Recommended Posts

How come when you write a dollar value, the dollar sign goes in front of the number, while at the same time, when we write a value in cents, the cent sign goes after the number?

For example:
$50
50¢
When we speak these values verbally, as "50 dollars" or "50 cents", the number comes first in both cases, followed by the symbol. So shouldn't they instead be written the same way they're spoken, like:
50$
50¢
Inquiring minds want to know...

I believe it is because the proper syntax for writing dollars as numerals is $50.00 and $0.50.

making the "cent" sign unique, and was probably more widely used when a cent actually added up to something considered valuable.
I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama

Thats how I do it. Very rarely is it ever seen the other way. I do remember a few general stores that had hand written price tags on the merchandise with the ¢ format on them (usually items under $1.00).
