ISP phone support

Recommended Posts

Stupid things the support gets to hear.

A friend of mine is working for an ISP on their support team.
Today a customer called her and said:
“Last week I was told by one of your colleagues that if I only restarted my computer I would be able to see what network I belong to.
Now I have started my computer in my bed room, the kitchen and the living room. But I don’t get a connection in either room”.

When she asked the customer if she had connected her computer to the fiber connection on the wall the customer replies:

“No I don’t have one of those (all apartments there have one), but I have an outlet for the police alarm where you say the fiber connection should be placed”.
:S:D:S:D:S:D:S:D

My g/f made a (not so) clever comment once too.
When she was asked if she had switched on the modem she said: “I don’t have any modem, I have a broadband connection”.
-Yep I have been teasing her about that.

She is actually partly correct. A cable modem really is not a true modem. Modems actually modulate and demodulate a signal from analog to digital, a cable modem is all digital. ;)

very different, but they do actually modulate/demodulate the signal.
I think we adopted the term modem for them out of familiar convenience though.
from Wiki:
"Broadband modems should still be classed as modems, since they use complex waveforms to carry digital data. They are more advanced devices than traditional dial-up modems as they are capable of modulating/demodulating hundreds of channels simultaneously."

I disagree. Cable modem does not deal with channels, that is the cable box. A cable modem is more of a network interface device. Similar to a router.
