kbordson 8 #1 July 29, 2008 With the "post the reputation" and some of the other thread/comments that I've seen, I was just wondering what people think about who they are and the converse of whom others think you are. Does it truly matter if someone thinks you're selfish and uncaring? Or do you really care if you are perceived as weak and a victim? If someone calls you a Republican/Democrat and you're not... Or if they call you shallow for discussing your feelings? How important is the internet becoming? Has the answer changed in the last 5-10 years? What might the answer be in another 5-10 years? RhondaLea 4 #4 July 29, 2008 Many years later, the only thing I can tell you is that of all the people I've met online first, only one was the same in real life as he presented himself to be online. He's a moderator here. It's seductive. People start to think it matters, and then you get: http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/3/dutycallsqy7.png and this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v715/rayskwire/Random/Too_Much_Computer.gif Your friends are the people you spend real time with, not the people with whom you exchange repartee on a web board. That doesn't mean that real relationships don't form as a result, but basing your opinion of someone on their words in a one-dimensional medium is absurd. Just because someone seems smart and expresses himself well doesn't mean he is a going to be a good person to have in your life; the converse is also true--one's ability to communicate with the written word is not indicative of one's character. I can't tell you how many times I've seen someone get locked into a position he didn't really hold because of the perceived need to support a friend, because he didn't like the person he was arguing with, or because he just felt like trolling a little, and it got out of hand. What does the result of that tell you about someone? That he's a total asshole? Or is it just that he's loyal to his friends, has a hot temper or likes to have a little fun pulling one over on someone else? How can you tell?If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

happythoughts 0 #9 July 29, 2008 It's effect is the same as any other information distribution tool. The only difference is that it is a two-way street. Think of the impact of television on our perceptions or expectations about life? Was real life supposed to be like Leave It To Beaver? Are Ward and June role models? Were all parents as dumb as the ones on the Disney shows on Sunday evenings? People obsess about the issues of the mythical "Jane" on Days Of Our Lives (or any daytime soap opera). In the 40s, people cared about Clark Gable. This same personality now is concerned about every aspect of Britneys life (and that of her soon-to-be-whacked-out sister). Now, it is a two-way street. YouTube. Online communities have replaced actual ones.

Interesting. I've had the opposite experience in that everyone I've met online first has turned out to be pretty much exactly what I expected when I met them in person. I've never noticed much difference in people's online vs. offline personas. But I guess that could just be a perception thing.

I've never noticed much difference in people's online vs. offline personas. But I guess that could just be a perception thing. I've had very similar experiences to yours, Keely. Although I've met some posters in person first, the posters whom I've met online first were as I had expected them to be, when I met them in person. Any surprises or subtle differences were usually interesting and didn't turn me off to them as people. Personally, I don't think that most people set out to be a specific "online persona". People often just favor one communication style over another, allowing some to express themselves more easily through written word, than others. The posts that we witness on here do not fully capture the full spectrum of someone's personality. It's just another piece of the puzzle of who that person is, or how he/she might be feeling at one given moment.

I'm going to give it time to update, and then it gets deleted anyway. Edited again to add that I'm an idiot. After uploading an avatar, you have to select the avatar.
