jimmytavino 16 #6 September 2, 2008 turkey vulture by the looks of it...in the second pic... ugly on the ground or when on a perch but BEAUTIFUL when in flight... excellent gliders. the red tail hawk is a bit more "boxy" in shape and i think, has a lighter colored head.. It's head is also bigger in proportion to it's body, than the t vulture... WHERE was the pic taken A. Copland??? jmy

Andy_Copland 0 #8 September 2, 2008 It was my first BASE jump since we lost a friend. So me and my buddy hit a local power tower for a memorial jump when it flew over me on the ground. I've never seen something fly with such ease and sense of calm, no rush, no crazy flapping. Just gliding along on the air Was pretty much northern Kentucky. 1338 People aint made of nothin' but water and shit. Until morale improves, the beatings will continue. birdlike 0 #9 September 2, 2008 Quote Any idea how big its wingspan was? Looks like it could be a Turkey Vulture... That's exactly what it looks like, to me. We have them all over here in Florida. There's a building in downtown West Palm Beach that gets SCORES of them perched all around the upper floor windows. (About a ten-story building, a nice one, too!) And they're flying all around the thing, as well. It's pretty weird. Makes me think it's like the Rosemary's Baby building or some shit like that went on inside it. I mean, a building, being a hangout for vultures?! But yeah, they look just like that picture.Spirits fly on dangerous missions Imaginations on fire

Yeah, they are magnificent to see in flight. Nowhere special to go, no job, no pressure, not even really any enemies... I like to sometimes lose myself in a fantasy while looking at them, like I could live a life like that, just gliding around with beautiful sights to see every day... Now, I'm waiting for the sucker punch, when you post a final pic that says, "Here's the closest picture I managed to get, are you sure this bird is a turkey vulture?" and it'll be a picture of you giving us the finger. shropshire 0 #13 September 2, 2008 I flown with a lot of soaring birds over the years and they are amazing. They show us where the thermals are and are so graceful they're a pleasure to share the air with and when they've had enough they simply change gear and naff off - it's a priveledge. (.)Y(.) DJL 235 #23 September 2, 2008 It's a Black Vulture. The head is a little small. It looks like the same thing we see on the Potomac around DC a lot, a little smaller than the TV, smaller black head, shorter neck. See difference here:Black Vulture (Coragyps atruatus) and Turkey Vulture"I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
