ccowden 0 #1 December 27, 2005 What the heck is the purpose of replying "PM Sent" to a post, other than to say, "Look at me! Look at me! I am replying to this!" ?? I mean, do you not think the person you sent the PM to will see it unless you post "PM Sent" in the thread? I would think the bright red words, "New Message" might be a giveaway. Seems to me that the only reason to reply "PM Sent" to a post would be so that everyone else knows that you are replying to it. In which case, doesn't that kinda defeat the purpose of a PM in a way? Sure I understand that your reply is private, but why is it necessary to tell everyone else that you did it?

NWFlyer 2 #4 December 27, 2005 QuoteYeah I figured someone would be THAT original. Except I was really original and didn't send you one! The only time I think it's valid is when someone is looking for specific information that the responder may not want to share in a post, but does want people to know that now the person who made the original post has the information that he/she is seeking. Otherwise it's a waste.
chaoskitty 0 #5 December 27, 2005 Maybe it some people's way of saying that the thread is a subject that should be discussed in private. .. not that anyone *ever* posts personal information in this public forum.. !
ccowden 0 #6 December 27, 2005 Nah, I don't buy that. We would have NO way of knowing whether the person who sent the PM gave the information they were looking for. If I had the info in that case, am I just supposed to assume there is no point in me PMing them because someone posted "PM Sent?"

Or if a discussion is getting argumentative and you prefer to take it to pms and not bicker in the fourm... just a way of saying "This aint over... he/she is just getting a private spanking" - not that I've ever gotten argumentative or anything.... or given spankings.... RhondaLea 4 #10 December 27, 2005 Sometimes "PM Sent" is the message. There's a context for that, but I'm too lazy to look for an example. I agree with what Kristi and Krisanne wrote, but it's not always because something is private, exactly, but because what one can say publicly and what one would say publicly are two different things. And sometimes it's just a joke. rlIf you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
ccowden 0 #11 December 27, 2005 Which is exactly my point. There is no reason for it other than to call attention to yourself and show everyone you are replying to it. And as far as the information PM like a phone number or something, I think it is like stated above, where the person wants everyone to see that they know the information in question. Like, "Look at me! I know this phone number!"

Sometimes the information given in a PM would be considered advertising if posted in the thread, and the would be poster chooses to abide by HH's forum rules. ccowden 0 #19 December 27, 2005 That's awesome! And my reply definitely fell into the "I am replying with the info." But, that was quite a bit ago and before I ever really considered the pointlessness of it. And I am not sure I excluded myself from this. But thanks for giving a great example of what I am talking about. Even if people read my "PM Sent" reply, are they just supposed to assume I had the right info and not bother PMing if THEY had the info?
tso-d_chris 0 #20 December 27, 2005 QuoteYeah so? Why reply with "PM Sent?" Can't you just PM the person? For every poster with a question, there's usually a lurker or two with the same question. The "PM sent" reply (which I rarely use, BTW) allows the lurkers to see that there is a way to get the information, even if they do not want to post publicly. In other words, it helps identify for the lurker who they need to direct their PMs to. For Great Deals on Gear

McDuck 0 #22 December 27, 2005 How about nearly oblivious post-whoring types who have trained themselves to rarely look up above the solid blue "subject" line in the forum list and threads? Especially during intellectually weighted threads like "anal sex", "freak flag" or any other thread that sees cochese replying like a fiend? In that instance, it's more of a "HEY! Check your PMs, you post-zombie!"
