DFWAJG 4 #1 September 8, 2008 I'm doing some research involving procedures 911 operators follow. Anyone a 911 operator or know an operator? I'd greatly appreciate your help. dm

JohnRich 4 #3 September 8, 2008 The first thing you always do is tell them to calm down. That seems to be real important - not getting them the ambulance right away that they asked for, but telling them to calm down. Then after doing that about five times, you start exercising protocol item #2. That's to repeat everything they tell you as if you don't believe them. "You were in an auto accident?" Yes, that's vital also, to understand exactly what their problem is. Don't just take their word for it. Whatever they say doesn't really count until you've repeated it back to them and they've confirmed it. Finally, after wasting all that time, THEN you can actually try and help them. grimmie 186 #7 September 8, 2008 911 procedures differ from each agency a bit. 911 call takers are not usually the dispatchers. The call takers send the call to PD or FD or both sometimes. And a lot of 911 calls are BS and get terminated.
AggieDave 6 #8 September 9, 2008 Quote 911 call takers are not usually the dispatchers. The call takers send the call to PD or FD or both sometimes. Sure, at agencies that have a huge budget. Maybe Dallas PD and HPD have separate divisions, but many places do not. Its kind of nice to be able to have the dispatcher yell across the room for answers for questions asked by the first responders. Sometimes an operator doesn't know the right questions for a situation due to not having been out there doing it before!--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
