I am so stoked (EMS Stuff)

Recommended Posts

Last night I joined the EMS Auxillary unit for my county. I love doing this stuff so much, I don't mind volunteering! I will go pick up my uniform tomorrow and then I can start riding with any ALS unit in the county... YIPPEE!!!! This is also about the only way to get hired on with the county here, so there are some good benefits too... I can't wait....;):)

Awesome! I start my ER clinicals next week and ride-a-longs a week and a half later. I can't wait!!! I'm most excited about the rides I have scheduled with the two different life flights in the region. :)

I can ride with life flight now on the aux, but couldn't in school, that is awesome that you can. I am very excited about this as well! Clinicals suck.... ride time rocks....:|

If anyone from the Greenville / Spartanburg area of south carolina is interested in the medical stuff..

Regional 1 allows first responders to fly with them for 2-3 days during september and october. They did it when I lived in that area.. dunno if they still do but if so never hurts to ask.

Too bad the FD has turned the way it has with requiring paramedic certs etc. All I wanted to do was fight fire and do tech rescue. No interest in patient care.

Just my view on that is: If i'm going go to go med school to work at a fire station why not just go to be a MD?

It is the same way nearly everywhere here also. Almost all the counties are now "fire/rescue". If I can get on with my county soon enough, since they just decided to merge, they will pay my way thru standards. I honestly have no desire to fight fires, but if that is what it takes to have my dreams then I will do it....;)

I've done the same fire program from the same book in 3 diff states and none grant reciprocity from the others. Now I kick myself daily for leaving my paid department. I've got enough time invested in classrooms and job training related to the FD I should at the very least have an associates degree.

You can always get hired on a granny getter ambulance

Yeah I thought about that, but I think that would get very old very quick.... Plus a lot of them around here wont work with you to go to school and since I eventually want to go to Medic school which is on "A" shift everywhere around here, holding my breath for the county is my best bet. Plus they will pay for it. EMT's don't get paid squat here, so unless I can find a 24/48 gig to get on with which will guarantee me 40 hrs per pay period of ot, I wont be able to afford to leave the job I have now. My county starts EMT's at 8.76/hr :o. The 40 hrs of OT is the only way I could even consider it....

With an ems/emt you can work in a hospital and they will work around your school hours. In fact, after your 90 days most hospitals offer to pay up to 1300 plus per semester for school. It might not be your dream job but it can help you get where you want to be.

That is a great idea, I will check with the local hospitals here and see what I can come up with. I am focused on the big picture, experience is experience....:)

Hehe...exactly opposite of me. I have lots of interest in patient care but no interest in structural fire. I'm a wildland firefighter and look forward to adding EMS duties to my quals so I can work as a fireline medic on wildfires, but structure work just doesn't do it for me. It's not very hard to get a job on an ambulance in my area if you want to do transfer service work (moving critical patients to larger towns, etc.) but the city handles 99% of 911 calls and you have to be cross trained (and willing to work for no money) to work for them.
Killing threads since 2004.

Seriously?!

Not to downplay the knowledge or skills of the EMS, cuz sometimes the can be better than the docs.....

but seriously, your comment is foolish. Even an EMT-P is under two years. So... you're saying that if you have to go back for the two years, you might as well be in for 11-13 years (the 4yrs for an undergrad, the 4yrs for med school and the 3-5yrs for residency.)

Congrats:)
Hell my company will pay for, and pay you while you go to medic school. You work on a BLS rig that responds code 3 (of course interfacility transfers too), and you can pick up shifts on an ALS rig, along with a shitload of standby's. There's a 2 year contract after you get your cert.....

BUT, ya got to work in Bakersfield Ca:P

Congrats mama!

I'm about 8 months into my PMDC. I've got about 36 of 120hrs of ride alongs done, 36 of 120hrs clinicals, 16hrs of OR. I'm about to test on Cardiology thursday then Fri & Sat is ACLS. I can't wait til I'm done!
You know what's similar between Cops and Firefighters? They both wanna be firefighters.

I'm saying I'm in it to fight fire. If I have to go to learn medical why not just make a career of that.

I do prefer the work of a medic that wants to be a medic as opposed to a firefighter that is doing the medic thing as a "requirement".

*edit* Not saying thats the case here, just an observation;)
