RALFFERS 0 #1 September 12, 2008 What in the world is the point of rebates??? Why can't I just get the discount at the point of purchase?... I don't know how companies benefit from these things, but obviously there has o be something in it for them. Please, enlighten me.Dialogue/commentary between Divot, Twardo & myself - "from your first Oshkosh when the three of us were riding to or from one of

That's easy.... rebates suck you in to making the purchase, but only about 30% of people actually send in the rebates, so the company in the end makes much more money. Plus, most rebates are from the manufacturer, not the seller. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

chaoskitty 0 #4 September 12, 2008 I don't have the exact numbers, but I imagine a lot of people never send in for the rebate because they either miss the deadline, lose the receipt, throw the box away.. or do something else that allows the company to keep their money. The last few rebates I've received have been a pre-loaded visa card with an expiration date on them. I imagine that either the company who issued the rebate, or VISA gets that money if I don't use it, of if I leave a balance of a few bucks on it. So the point being, if they gave everyone the POS discount, they don't benefit from the people who don't send in the rebate.

skydiver30960 0 #9 September 12, 2008 I recall sending in for a rebate on some software or other, and of course it demands you send in the ORIGINAL of the receipt, the barcode, some doohickey from inside the package, your birth certificate, well not that one but the originals of everything else. About two months later I get a postcard in the mail that basically says "no money for you, you didn't send us everything we asked for." End of discussion, no further explination, no suggestions about how to continue, didn't return the originals of what I HAD sent them, and it WAS everything dammit! Oops, guess I sounded a bit pissed there. Anymore, I just don't deal with the rebates. I shop based on out of pocket expense, and if the rebate actually comes back then it's just extra money. I mean, generally, the rebate value is worth the PIA hoops you jump thru to get the rebate, right? anyway... with all the talk of gas prices jumping due to Ike, I thought i'd pass this along, a rebate from Shell Oil for FREE gas or something... I'm thinking that there has to be a way to use it more often though...Randomly f'n thingies up since before I was born...
