Major Train Wreck in California . . . Right Now!

Recommended Posts

A Metrolink train carrying approx 350 people collided head on with a freight train in Chatsworth which is just north of Los Angeles. From the TV pictures it appears the locomotive of the Metrolink telescoped into the passenger car behind it and that's where most of injures seem to be.

So far six are confirmed dead. Many are injured and the death toll will probably climb. I know this area and have ridden the train through there a few times. There is a big sweeping turn where the collision took place. No word yet which train was in the wrong place. Also no word yet on the fate of either of the train crews.

This is the worst train wreck here since 11 died in an Amtrak accident in 2005. Oddly one man who survived that crash was in this one too. Local news is carrying rescue efforts non-stop and this will go into the night . . .

Very tragic! :(

I'm waiting to hear about 2 of my friends from work that take that train.

Sounds like there might be people underneath the overturned railcar as well.

My thoughts and condolences to all of the victims, family and friends.

Be yourself!

Depending on which newscast you are watching there are now 10 and up to 20 dead and multiple injuries.

Nobody is speculating on who's at fault yet, but I have to ask....Why the hell do commuter trains have to share the exact same track with freight trains?! Yeah, I know it's more economical to use the track that's already laid, but how much is a life worth!! B|

Was that the one where the idiot parked his SUV on the R/R crossing and walked away??

I wish the motherfucker who tried to beat a train in his full tanker truck of fuel in Huntsville, AL back in the early 80's got the same punishment. His selfish actions caused about 20+ deaths by fire of people caught stopped in traffic at the railroad crossing. Two of the victims lived on my street. To this day I still can't believe the bastard lived. >:(

Yes, like Lisa said it was right here in Glendale. The story was he wanted to commit suicide. So he pulled his Jeep onto the tracks but he got cold feet in the end and bailed.

They are now reporting a LAPD Officer is among the dead. He was on his way home . . .

I actually don't remember. I was probably 13 or 14... But I do remember hearing the explosion at home 6 miles away. My hearing was a bit better then than it is now. :S

I find that a little hard to swallow also. Haz-Mat carriers are goverened by special regulations that have been in place for decades. Especially, concerning R/R crossings. Same as with school buses. There is probably a little more to the story.

A little bit of searching turned this up:

Title: Miller Transporters Inc., Tractor Cargo Tank Semitrailer/Southern Railway System Freight Train Collision and Fire, Huntsville, Alabama, September 15, 1981.
NTSB Report Number: RHR-82-01, adopted on 3/9/1982
NTIS Report Number: PB82-917001

guess I need to search the NTSB website for this case.

From what I could gather, online reports only go back to 1997.

Depends on the site you're on. The Huntsville Times website archives only go back to 1991, so now the only way to retrieve the story is to go to the public library and find the microfiche copy of the newspaper story, or go to the newspaper building and ask.

I'd ask my parents if they remember any details but I doubt they will after 27 years. The two that died on my street was the mother and sister of a girl I rode carpool to school with. [:/]

We're way off topic anyway, since this accident was a "Casey Jones". Supposedly, with the railway interlink system and satellite communications, safeties are in place to keep this sort of thing from happening.

Sometimes fuck-ups happen. Two freight trains collided a mile from my house on the other side of the river. The tracks cross my street 2 miles away. The collision was a mile away from me because the river curves that way. Anyway, mandatory evacuation of my town because one of the rail cars was carrying a caustic substance that was leaking. We ended up spending the night at a friend's house 20 miles away when we found all the hotels and motels filled up. I think this happened in January 2006. We just got our class action lawsuit money a month ago.
