IRS stamps on whiskey bottles

Recommended Posts

My inlawas gave us a box filled with a variety of whiskey, Jack, Jim, all the major players where in the box of good.. most of the botles are unopend.
Just curious as to what year the IRS stopped putting those little red and white paper seals on the bottles, as these are all still stamped and at least two of the old bottles of dark whiskey have almost gone clear or colorless.
I no longer drink, so these things will be collecting more dust or becoming more aged now, perhaps some of them will migrate to a boggie...

so does anyone know when the stamps where stopped?

No idea when the stamps stopped. I do have this bottle with the seal intact dated 1975.

I'll never drink it and definitely won't take it to the dz for the lushes to devour. :P

I'd like to give it to somebody who will enjoy it, but I can't send it via mail. Guess it will just sit here collecting dust.

quiet squeak!!! i know how to treat a fine bottle of liquor. i promise i will treat it right and not "polish" it off. maybe let it sit on my mantle until the night i propose to that special girl or when my brother finally gets laid, or any other rare and special occasion =D but never all in 1 night.

I appreciate that Gary, but i am more concerned that she is giving away a 30 year old VO whiskey that may actually be worth somthing to her:)I've emailed her and aksed her to contact Seagrams to see if thye can help

I was under the impression that whisky stopped aging when bottled. So unless the 75 was a special year of extra good whisky, it won't be worth a ton.

Maybe I am wrong though, and it is more valuable simply because there aren't alot of bottles of 33 year old whisky lying around?

Most hard spirts do not keep aging, only wine does for the most part. Blended whiskey is one of those that is very consistant from year to year or even decade to decade where as a single malt will change more from year to year.

I've seen tax stamps on bottles in the late 70's but I can't seem to find when they phased them out.

Me either... Maybe ask some of the liquor store owners?
