jakee 1,566 #29 September 7, 2008 QuoteQuote and they have done many jumps when launches are happening, they are not THAT rare. Show one other shuttle/wingsuit jump. Ever. Please. Additionally, the staff at USA Today obviously chose the shuttle shot as their favorite, and the National Geo photographer commented specifically on the composition, how the shoreline and water form a triangle, how the shuttle frames the wingsuiters with the waterline, and how it all leads the eye to follow GreyMike. yeah, I'm biased because I'm in the shot. But I'm also a photographer/director by trade, and it's moronic to suggest the photo isn't well composed. You might not like it, that's fine. But to say it's not well-composed is just plain __________whatever. I dunno, for some reason it doesn't grab me. Ok, from what you guys have said I'm appreciating a lot more now how much effort has gone into the shot, and I'm sure it was a fantastically cool jump, and if I'd been on it I'd love to have a shot like that on my wall, and I've voted for it because there's a camera on the line that could go to a skydiver... but it still doesn't make me go 'wow'. Maybe it's because it's so small - looks like the type of pic that would benefit a lot in big, high-res format?Do you want to have an ideagasm?
DSE 5 #30 September 7, 2008 No, it's not as artistic as some of the others. But the others are all shots that can be set up more than once, fairly easily. They're all shots that can be reproduced, and have been many times. But...this shot has never, ever been taken before, and likely won't be taken again. This shot is a skydiving shot that is now in front of the entire world. Skydivers have the opportunity to support the sport and support a skydiver, and IMO, only an asshole would deliberately support a whuffo over a skydiver when it's this sort of scenario. Voting for Scotty's picture costs none of us anything; if the image wins, it's a huge win and publicity boost for skydiving, and a fellow skydiver walks away with a great prize and a terrific story. One element of a truly great image is the time-capture, because that moment may never be re-lived. Can anyone here assure that they can get a better shot that contains all of the same elements? Of course not. I'd challenge anyone criticizing this photo to present a similar photo that captures the metaphors this image brings forth.

I'm too caught up, I guess. When there is no benefit nor detriment to the voter, it seems that one would want to .....never mind. Either you get it or you don't. See you next month! bluerosie 0 #34 September 8, 2008 So, if a fellow skydiver has a really average looking baby, but asks us to vote for said baby as the cutest amongst non-skydiving competitors, one would be an asshole to not vote for what we don't consider the most attractive baby? Does being a fellow skydiver automatically mean you should get all skydiver's votes? Or does the character of the skydiver involved come into play? How supportive have they been of other skydivers? How supportive have they been of other skydivers when going up against nonskydivers? And if it's such a brotherhood, why is there so much mocking , derision, and condescension within the brotherhood? If there are multiple skydivers involved, do you vote for the one with the most skydives or the one most deserving of the prize? Inquiring voters want to know what the proper protocol is. DSE 5 #35 September 8, 2008 When the world's largest publication gives me an opportunity to vote for a skydiver baby vs a non-skydiver baby, get back to me with your question. Chances are based on general principles, I'll support a fellow skydiver before I'd support a non-skydiver. Bottom line here is, I know exactly what went into that jump and the practice jumps that occurred beforehand. I know how long the event lasted, I was present for the disappointment that the planned shot didn't occur due to a few factors. I'm bothered that any skydiver would be dim enough to suggest this was just a "go up and shoot whatever you can" sort of event. Were it so, we'd have seen a lot of these sorts of images already. USAToday is the largest publication in the US, and the largest world-wide English publication. With Metro print editions, USA Today is the largest global publication. It is not the world's largest singly-distributed publication, that award goes to Yomiuri Shimbun. Outside of Japan, only the German paper BILD enjoys a larger circulation than USA Today. Society of Professional Journalists apparently doesn't look at Asia as part of their statistics. Oops. Mea culpa. Next time, Scotty should go for a photo in Japanese or Chinese. He could almost double his circ reach.

stoney3434 0 #42 September 8, 2008 A FIRM "DITTO" to Virgin Burner,... and I also "know" how hard it was to time this photo,........from the words of those involved... It would be sad to see a "once in a lifetime" photo opportunity,... that was planned for, practiced for, and then exeuted in such a successful way be selected as better than a photo that while very good ,.....can be ( and has been) replicated a thousand times over .......... I have Eagle fishing photos and Owl hunting photos and one Peruvian Condor gliding photo that are all better than the eagle shot I see competing with Scotty's picture,... I also have (and have seen) many hiking and climbing photos that capture the sun and the majesty of the Natural world well,...but I KNOW I will never have another photo of a space shuttle taking off framed by 3 of my friends and that I can look at and actually "imagine" myself being where Scooty was when he took the shot. Do whatever feels best for youselves as far as voting for whatever photo you think is best...but please don't degrade the accomplishment that Scotty's photo represents .... He did what every skydiver does on eah jump,...he planned his jump and then exeuted it. Also, as with Virgin Burner,..for myself,....knowing the unspoken bond I believe I share with 98% of every other man and woman who intentionally throws themselves out the door of an aircraft for the sheer love of it,...and with no compelling "alternative" reason to do otherwise, I will ALWAYS support one of those men or women if I can. From such a perspetive, I have voted each day for Sotty's photo and I encourage each of you who also feel such a bond to do the same. Thanks, StoneyLife is what happens while we are making other plans.
