PhreeZone 20 #9 September 6, 2008 There have been a total of 123 Shuttle launches since 1981, 15 of those have been night launches. A large number of flights have also been conducted through conditions that skydiving ops would not fly in. They used to be able to jump from Titusville but that area is now under a grounding during launch and have to now jump at Sebastian much further away. There are an average of 4 launches a year currently, 1986 was the busiest at 9 launches. From 2003-present there have been 11 launches and there are only 8-10 more scheduled launches of the shuttles ever. All told since 1981 there have been less then 50-60 chances to get a shot like that. If you want to see how short of a time peroid it is http://www.brunobrokken.com/video/space%20shuttle.wmv Its a rare photo, but some of the others are really nice as well.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
sartre 0 #10 September 6, 2008 The fact that it is a rare photo doesn't qualify it as a prize-winning photo. Interesting, thought-provoking....but not necessarily the best-composed of the choices. The eagle one looks like a photo shop job to me, but I assume it isn't, as it's up there. For some reason it just doesn't look real to me. I guess there's two schools of thought here: vote for what you think is the best composition, or vote for the one that represents skydiving and a fellow skydiver. For some people, they're probably one and the same.
IslandGuy 0 #11 September 7, 2008 Thanks for posting this in the Bonfire VB. Hope it helps Scotty out. Do a Google Images search on eagles fishing and you get hundreds if not thousands of pictures… of eagles fishing. Arguably, half of them are better in some way than the one posted in the photo competition I’m surprised by how many skydivers suddenly become photography experts/critics. Composition, color, whatever. Me, I skydive, and I’d rather look at some ratty ass skydiving picture of any discipline, than just about anything else. And, if I’d rather look at it, I’m voting for it. To me, uniqueness does count – big time! If it is rare, it is valuable. My hat’s off to Scotty for capturing that image. There are no others like it in the world. So many things had to happen perfectly to get that shot… well… I can’t say there wasn’t some luck involved. Half your subject matter is 40+ miles away and the other half close by, then the lenses, the lighting, the shutter speed, aperture all need to be correct. Then you have to get a few wingsuit guys flying along at 100 mph tight enough to be in frame, then you have to fly your camera to the spot in the sky where you think all these moving objects look halfway decent together. And, you have about 100 seconds to do that. All that alone is pretty amazing, but then there is weather, launch delays and problems, less than ideal spots, winds, the list is long. This is not just another day at the DZ. I guess if you don’t get it, you don’t get it. I thought the other pics were great. Hell, they are the best of probably thousands submitted. Vote however you like, but me, I skydive and I’m voting for a skydiving picture taken by a fellow skydiver, regardless of the fact that the shot was nearly impossible to get, and get right. Awesome work Scotty! Hope you win and not somebody that’s taking pictures holding their camera with both hands, feet on the ground, and looking thru a viewfinder. DSE 5 #18 September 7, 2008 Quote and they have done many jumps when launches are happening, they are not THAT rare. Show one other shuttle/wingsuit jump. Ever. Please. Additionally, the staff at USA Today obviously chose the shuttle shot as their favorite, and the National Geo photographer commented specifically on the composition, how the shoreline and water form a triangle, how the shuttle frames the wingsuiters with the waterline, and how it all leads the eye to follow GreyMike. yeah, I'm biased because I'm in the shot. But I'm also a photographer/director by trade, and it's moronic to suggest the photo isn't well composed. You might not like it, that's fine. But to say it's not well-composed is just plain __________whatever.

I hazard a guess and say the pic was not composed at all and probably just a random frame from a series of shots taken during the flight, in the hopes of catching "THAT" shot. Which i dont think they did. But hey I'm not in the pic and have no vested interest in it at all, and i still think it's a crappy picYou are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky) My Life ROCKS! Care to go for three? Practice jumps were done prior to the actual launch, in addition to discussion of positioning during the jump. Believe it or not...there is a difference between a guy who throws a camera on his head and calling himself a "skydiving photographer" and an actual photographer who sees things a little differently than the average joe. In this case, there were two folks that look at the world that way. Course', your next comment is that there probably were a lot of photos to choose from or something equally banal (and incorrect). Hazard your next guess as to how many shots were taken on that jump. It's not "spray n' pray" like many photographers seem to do.

You obviously differ in your opinion, hooray you. I too have a little experience in still photography (granted mostly B&W), and i dont like that image. Hagen 0 #24 September 7, 2008 strange... I posted info about the voting at our local skydiving forum, and the first comment a got was the same - about disliking the photo. maybe average jumpers just do not like men in skirts?otherwise I cannot understand the phenomenon - it seems to me that normally skydivers would vote just to show their solidarity and support. but not in this case, unfortunatelyhowever, I think that the picture will win. and I usually have good intuation
