QuoteTampa, Florida -- A drunk driver drove through a security fence and onto the runway at Vandenburg Airport today before being boxed in by airport personnel, the sheriff's office said. The incident started just after noon when Kathy Lee Wilcox, 51, of Tampa drove her Hyundai up to a closed gate, stopped, backed up and then drove through the fence -- 6-foot tall, topped with barbed wire and bearing two signs - "Stop" and "No Trespassing," according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's office. She then drove onto the runway. Airport personnel went after her and managed to box her in until deputies got to the scene. Wilcox was charged with DUI with Property Damage, a felony. The sheriff's office says the damage to the fence is around $12,000. The damage to Wilcox's car is about $2,500. Among other tenants, the airport is home to the sheriff's K9 and aviation units. This best part is this, "The incident started just after noon..." Noon and that drunk? Yep, ya can't drink all day unless you start in the morning. Last week, somebody stole the Krispy Kreme truck. When will this crime wave end? (Truck was recovered quickly) At least Vandenburg Airport is away from the water. Across the bay, a few years ago, a couple in their late 70s drove down the runway and into the bay (with a rental car). Personally... if I see a large red blimp parked on the "interstate", I'm going to stop and ask directions before reaching the end. My favorite part was their solution... to rent another car.
