simplyputsi 0 #53 September 24, 2008 Well, when I turned on my computer yesterday it stopped before starting to boot up and diplayed text that said back up my files immediately, hard drive failure was imminent. Uhhhh how exactly does it know that?? A friend of mine says toshita has hard drive failure programmed into their machines. Conspiracy!!!!!! Anywho. I backed up what I wouldn't want to lose. We'll see how long it goes before totally crapping out. I'm sure I can get by on my work laptop for awhile if I have to. They frown upon personal use of it. Whatever!!!Skymama's #2 stalker -
normiss 871 #54 September 24, 2008 CRC/checksum testing of the drive prior to the O/S mounting the drive. If the blocks don't pass the test...imminent failure.
aardvarkeater 0 #55 September 24, 2008 Modern hard drives have a technology built into them called S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology). It basically monitors different aspects of the hard drive and can provide warnings if a failure is imminent. The laptop probably had a program on it to read the S.M.A.R.T. data from the drive and let you know the HD was failing. Glad you backed everything up. Since it looks like the laptop's HD is going to fail, go get a new one now. Don't wait for a failure. It's much easier to get back up and running if the HD hasn't died yet. I'm assuming you've purchased an external HD. If possible I'd still try to image the current laptop HD. This makes it much easier to restore everything to the new laptop drive. Give me a call if you have questions. I PM'd you my phone number.Muff Brother #4026 Loco Zapatos Rodriguez SCR #14793
simplyputsi 0 #56 September 24, 2008 Actually I have not purchased the external. I don't have a ton of files that need to be backed up. I mainly care about my pictures, some word and excel files as well as a pdf here and there. And if the HD goes I'm not replacing the piece o shiz. I'm just going to get a new laptop. I've had it with toshita. I need a new one for my business anyway. Can you say write off!!! yeah baby!! Yeah!!Skymama's #2 stalker -

eeneR 3 #62 September 24, 2008 Incredibly useful information!!! I have lost track of the number of times I had to go in and get passwords for customers. eeneR 3 #64 September 24, 2008 Dont worry, I only do this when directly instructed by a customer. When it happens it is fully documented from multiple levels of management etc. Oh just as an FYI I am one of those network types I am a site engineer for a very large datacenter.
