Rig Fit

Recommended Posts

My little buddy KindredSpirit bought a used Talon...kinda large for him but looked OK during the try on period ...tonight we hung him from the rafters(he's helping me with house reno's) to see how the rig is gona be under canopy(no reserve in tray)...it looks a hell of alot looser then we all(rigger's included) figured it would be(see pic's) ...he has the leg straps maxed...wondering what oppions others have on him jumping this container.

Included are a couple pic's of me(I'm a tad bigger than he and the rig seems to fit me well untill I hung from the rafters as he did)

It doesn't look that bad to me. It's not so loose your head would fit under one of the reserve risers so you could sneak out of the rig that way, and the chest strap doesn't look like it's a choker, and the handles seem to be in about the right place.

How loose are the leg straps when they are cinched all the way down? The hip rings look like they're in the right place; are they?

As long as you can reach the toggles, I don't see where it's all that bad. It will also fill out a little when you get a reserve in the pack tray.

It's not custom built for me so I know the fit can't be perfect.
I'm still going to jump it. Fits better than the student rigs anyway.
Opinions from others would be helpful though, :$

***

It will come in some with a reserve in it, but DAMN!:|

I'd triple check the chest strap on every jump...:)

...and it's going to be loose on you and moving around in free fall. Make sure you can get the handle.

Check into getting the harness re sized for you, it looks like nice gear that you'll have for a while....why not make it fit right!?

Riggers/Anyone,

How much of a gap should there be between top of shoulders and reserve risers when under canopy? Or, how much is too much?

A 3 or 4 finger wide gap is normal between your shoulders and your shoulder pads.

Hi Dennis, Peter...

For the rest of the readers: you can't really see this in the photos, but the laterals are too long, not just the main lift webs. According to the manufacturer, the MLWs are too long by 1 inch, the laterals are too long by 2 inches. The rig floats around a fair bit on his back if I grab on to it and push and pull it around, even with a reserve in it.

Options:

1. Jump it as is. Probably doable but not ideal. My biggest concern would be the "hole" at the back (see BIGUN's link).

2. Have it modified. Whether this is worth doing depends on the cost vs the value of the rig. I know you're already looking into this.

3. Sell it and use the money to buy something else.

4. Steal Dennis' rig.

It's been mentioned that it will fit a bit better with the reserve in it, but remember that if you ever need to use the reserve, the reserve will no longer be in it, of course. You can't count on having the reserve in there.

I'd like to take a closer look at how the harness fits you, especially now that the reserve is out - I don't think I saw you in it without the reserve.

P.S. How much are you loading that ceiling? :D

Look at the location of the hip rings. It could be that his leg straps aren't tight enough and that could at least help the problem if he tightened them up. The hip rigs are up past his hips it looks like, but I could be wrong. Its a photo. ANd you're probably right about the laterals, you just cant see tehm from the photo

Cheers,
Travis

Between three and six inches is normal (depending on body composition). Even on my custom fitted rigs, the three ring is at eye level when under canopy.

Here are a couple more pic's showing the hip ring location a little better and another angle on the MLW..

I dont think(newb opinion)that only shortening the MLW by 1 inch would be sufficient and there dosent appear to be enough room left to shorten the laterals by 2 inches(again..newb opinion)...

I would think(yet again...newb opinion) that the MLW should be shortened by 3 to 4 inches...some lateral adjustment would be nice...but it dosent look like there is much more then a inch to remove...and of course smaller leg straps would be very nice...for that matter a smaller yoke would be idea......

The W/L on the ceiling is approx.01 to 1 ;)

I just posted this picture of me under canopy in another thread, I have some space, but not as much as your buddy.

BTW, my rig was custom made for me.

Thanks everyone :)
Sorta mixed responces on if it looks ok to jump....it deff does not fit well and having it modified is not cheap....it looks like the leg pads can be adjusted without touching the structure of the rig to allow for a bit more leg strap adjustment(advisable?)

On another note its educational to see how other peoples rigs fit....mine fits quite well with the mlw only lifting off by about 2 inches(less if I really tighten the legs)

Pic attached(that goofy expression is "ooooh...I'm gona hit the target":P

Well a certain someone removed some stiching where the leg pads were stiched to the leg straps ......so they could be tightened farther....

results look good...got about 3 more inches of tightening on the legs...

rig will be rigger inspected again.

And whats wrong with black pull-up's???(no it wont be attached to the reserve handle for jumping :P)

I jump a Talon as well. From the look at the photos after the pad mods, the gap at the shoulders looks just like mine. I have not had any problems with the rig moving around during freefall or under canopy. Even though it is an older model, it is a comfortable rig.
