shropshire 0 #1 September 28, 2008 The wife and I have just returned from a weeks of flying and suning ourselves in southern Spain. The weather wasn't brilliant this trip; I flew every day and had a great time.... Although I did have a "Bit of a do!!" on my first day... coming into land on a beach, I had way too much break on (for some reason unknown to me now!!!) and I span my glider at just above tree top height [DOH].. I was heading towards another stand of trees and a cafe-bar (bad news!!) but managed to pull her around and PLF'd on the road (NEVER GIVE UP!!!). Anyway the rest of the week was uneventfull and beautiful, flying with great mates. On our last day, we visited the Picaso musseum in Malaga. He was a genius but could draw for shit (.)Y(.) JohnRich 4 #13 September 29, 2008 Nice photos. In the "BigEars.jpg" photo, that doesn't look right. What's with the end cells folding downward like that? Is that dangerous? In "63 Tony.jpg", what's that rod strapped between his knees?
shropshire 0 #14 September 29, 2008 Hi John, "Big Ears" is a deliberate way of reducing the size of canopy to reduce lift and loose height (as you can see the cloud above me is rather dark and so I'm wanting to come down. One simply pulls in the 2 outside A-Lines and then pump out the deflation. Nope, not dangerous, it's an established practice and a stable configuration. The silver bar is the Speed-Bar, which pulls down the A-Lines, reducing the angle of attack of the canopy and thus increases air speed (it's on a pulley system and using our legs is far easier than trying to hold in the A-Risers on our sky dive rigs).
