kbordson 8 #1 October 6, 2008 So... I went to a movie this weekend and it made me wonder If I wanted to break away from the control and monitoring of the government/the man/ the system, could I or would I WANT to?! Being a doctor, there will always be government involvement (certification, DEA numbers, . . . ) Owning a house or even land (even in the more remote areas) includes taxes and zoning/regulations. Travel includes a passport. Could you give it all up to life a more "private" life?

Amazon 7 #4 October 6, 2008 Quote Could you give it all up to life a more "private" life? I could.. very easily. I even have the training and the means to live fairly well.. BUT Who the hell wants to live that much of an anti-social existenceI have seen people like that over in Eastern WA and N Idaho...thanks but no thanks. Most are heavily into militia movements or christian identity.

I'm with you, though. I have the training and the ability to be able to make it quite well in most of the lower 48, but why would I want to. I do like the idea of being in a town of less than 100,000 AND with in a very short drive to a lot of DZ (including a couple of turbines).--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." TrophyHusband 0 #7 October 6, 2008 just today i watched an mtv true life where you can do just that someplace in minnisota. google dick proenneke. he did just that in alaska. i've seen one of the movies made about him, he's very impressive. some day i want to have a cabin that is mostly off the grid. i would still have to pay property taxes and i would want propane as well, but no phone, electricity, and hopefully no cell service. i would probably spend a lot of weekend there, but mostly i would have to stay back in the civilized world, obligations to other people, you know. even if i were independently wealthy so i didn't have to work, and i didn't have a family, i don't think i could go off the grid full time. every now and then i get to go camping for a few days and sever all communication with the outside world, and i love it. quite often i get to go up in the woods for a day or an afternoon and even those little breaks from civilization are nice. meg has asked for orders to alaska, so maybe i'll get to spend even more time temporarily off the grid. whatever could be going on in your life that would make you think about getting away from it all? (where's that cabin in the Black Hills when I need to hide from the world?! Remote... accessible only with an atv.... or hiking the deer paths.) gearless_chris 1 #11 October 6, 2008 Quoteyou could rent a cabin somewhere for a weekend to study. it may not be a bad idea. Even if you own your house, you're renting it from the government, with property taxes. It sucks that you aren't allowed to go completely off the grid. The Amish still have to work along with us to keep the property they own. I don't want to live off the grid right now, but I'd like to have the option."If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane.
