I was wondering if it would be possible to skydive and land in a 50' pool filled with bubble-wrap and live. Any thoughts?

I wouldn't try it. There's no telling what's gonna happen. Either you bounce up 100 feet then frap on the hard ground outside of the pool, or you burst most of the bubbles and then tear your aorta due to the near sudden stop from 120 mph to 0 in less than one second, or better yet be knocked out instantly a-la Dale Earnhardt #3 due to the forces of the stop on the brain.

But hey, I'm no physicist.... :P

But of course, you could be really bad at accuracy or have a sudden gust of wind blow you off course at the last second and miss the pool entirely. That would suck. :D

Well see thats the thing. You have 50' to stop in providing, of course, you dont just bounce straight back up.

And yes I meant without opening.

Sounds like a project for the guys at Mythbusters! I'm sure they'll put their favorite dummy to work!

I whole-heartedly agree, and THEN the Mythbusters can take on the project and explain why B&C's attempt didn't work. :D:D:D

Maybe there is a physics expert out there who could provide a formula so I could run the numbers and see what deceleration would be required for a human body travelling at 120mph (with minimal injury of course).

Assuming constant deceleration from the moment of impact until complete stop, you would decelerate over .6 seconds, with a deceleration of approximately 85 m/s^2, or 8.5 g's.

Granted, in real life, you'll be closer to 1 g just after you hit, and at a much higher deceleration as you approach the bottom, but it seems it would be survivable.

edit: chances of attempt will go up with an increase in consumption of ethanol (beer), and probability of survival will decrease ;)
