ltdiver 3 #1 October 23, 2008 In the 1960's-Present we've had trailers and the like at the DZ for the locals (not to mention tents). Now here's the next generation of what we could have! "They" call it downsizing. It'd be upsizing for us! ;^) Tiny Houses Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon

JohnRich 4 #4 October 23, 2008 They're living on land owned by someone else - they're mooching. This is nothing new - millions of people have already done this by selling their houses and living out of RV's as they travel the country in their retirements. And they don't mooch off of others for land to do it.

Wanna blame their children for mooching off of them for 18 years, maybe more? If you really are that miserable of a person, maybe your children will abandon you if you need them. After all, god forbid you mooch off of them. That has to be one of the dumbest things I have ever seen posted. And this being the Bonfire, that is saying a lot. If they're going to brag about cutting down on their expenses and environmental impact, then it doesn't count if you're doing so by mooching off of others. Everyone likes to think that Thoreau was so great for going off and living in the woods alone to meditate. But he did so in a borrowed cabin on someone else's land, and used borrowed tools to get by. That's not being self-sufficient and living off the land, as everyone thinks he did.

DSE 5 #11 October 26, 2008 if they've cut down on their expenses, it doesn't matter *how* they're doing it if it's not at *your* expense. Taking care of parents is common to most cultures (including America until recently). If their children want to let their parents live on their land, I say "Terrific!" Even if they don't live on their children's land (and where their children live is fairly expansive), they still have reduced their own expenses and environmental footprint. Lighten up, Francis. JohnMitchell 16 #12 October 26, 2008 Regardless of whose land they live on, it is a great example of how to get by with less stuff. As an average middle class American, I have waayyy more stuff than I really need, so much that my stuff sometimes owns me. I looking forward to the day we downsize. How far will we go? I don't know if I could fit my life into 100 square feet, as I have too many hobbies(shooting, reloading, wood working, beer making, etc.) and Valinda has the jumpsuit business. I would like to squeeze down to maybe 1000 sq. feet. Those tiny homes are very energy efficient. Witness the $15/month utility bills. That alone makes it a model for the future. He's had more sex since he's moved into his novelty house than before! :^0 ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
