happythoughts 0 #1 October 30, 2008 When you sign up for Facebook, Reunions, or a zillion other sites - you will get to a point where it says, "Since you gave us your email address, would you like us to go through your address book and spam all your friends?" That's is how to do it. Also, when I get a "friend request", it also has a button that says, "We have your frickin' email address, would you like to 'opt out' of our spam database?" So, you don't even have to be a member to get "valuable updates". Non-internet businesses do it too. When I was signing up for a bank loan, there is a little box that says, "It is ok for us to provide your personal information to our 'business partners' for your benefit?" That means all manners of new insurance, in-house bank stock brokers, and fund managers will get every aspect of your financial picture with your phone number. Read before your click or sign. It's true that unless you un-check the box to opt-out of the spam, you'll get the spam. However, by law, personal and financial info given to potential lenders is confidential. So if a potential lender shares your personal or financial info (other than your e-mail address if you don't un-tick that little box), with anyone else, it's illegal. Not saying it's never done, but it is illegal; so it's probably done less often than one might think.

I've dropped my business card in those whenever I see them at a restaurant, and I have gotten a couple of lunches. So contrary to the cliche, there IS a free lunch. My bank has its own brokers and insurance subsidiaries. They just pass the info along to them. You get a phone call and a regular clump of snail-mail. I used to sign my ex-wife up for the fishbowl phone calls. Also, the occasional visit from the Mormons. Almost anything that starts with "Christian..." something, and is there "to help you". The ladies from the Christian Marriage Support Group were a hoot.
