Selling Reserve- How to take off rig?

Recommended Posts

I would use scissors...:S

Just kidding...

My reserve is on with Slinks... To remove it, I would undo the slinks, then either use the slink or tieline to keep all the ends of each riser's lines together.

I don't think you should have any problem uninstalling it yourself, I have moved my main around a few times and the reserve fundamentally is no different except it probably should be installed and packed by the rigger on the next rig, or if you install it yourself, you should fully disclose to the rigger you installed it so he can inspect every part of it to make sure he agrees with your technique before (s)he packs it.:)
I have definitely found keeping the lines tied together (each riser on its own tie) makes the reinstall much easier of my main.

If you want to be super special, take a piece of cardboard about the size of a CD jewel case. Label the four corners "right rear, right front, left rear, left front". Poke 4 holes, one in each corner. As you undo the slinks or links, immediately reattach them to the cardboard to the proper corner's hole. That way the lines are less likely to get messed up and tangled, as this is how the manufactures ship new canopies.

I would personally put new slinks or links on with a new rig, but if you want to keep yours, you could use plastic zip ties to attach the ends of the lines to the cardboard so as long as the zip ties are the smooth ones with no sharp edges and you leave enough slack they can be cut off safely...

I am selling my reserve without the rig and I was just wondering what the best way to remove it from my rig is... do I need a rigger or is this something I can do on my own? Has anyone done this before?

Thanks!

Read the soft link installation instructions in the SMART manual, then do them in reverse remove them.

To add to the above.

As you open your reserve and remove it from the freebag be care not to snag, step on, spill beer on, etc, etc, any of the reserve components or the reserve it self. The links should be removed from the risers, NOT THE LINES FROM THE LINKS. This will just make it easier for everybody. If the links are metal french links, make sure you know which way to turn the barrel so you don't split it. And be very careful removing the metal links from the risers. Often the edge of the threads on the links are sharp and can damage the risers to the point of needing to be replaced. It's not hard to do but be slow and careful.

If you don't have a card as above to put the links on stack them up and wrap a rubber band around the stack. Daisy chain the lines. Put in a heavy plastic bag and in a card board box to protect it.

New canopies come with links; used canopies should be sold with links. Doing otherwise is tacky, imho.

Good point... I guess I was trying to say, if I was putting a used reserve in my rig, I might want to buy new slinks... Kind of like when you move, it is a good time to replace the hoses behind the washing machine. :P

No manufacturer has stated a life for soft links.
I always replace soft links when I re-line main canopies ... every 300 jumps on tandems and maybe 600 jumps on sport mains.
Reserve soft links should last the life of the canopy: say ... 20 deployments or 20 years.
As long as you are gentle - and don't use any sharp tools - you should be able to install and remove soft links a dozen times without damage.
