wmw999 2,584 #54 November 7, 2008 Do you want to be treated like an adult or a child? If you're living with your parents and lying to them (or waiting for them to ask the right question) in order to get something, then you're behaving more like a teenager than an adult. An adult determines what they need, what they need to get it, and then is honest about it. You could ask to borrow money from your parents for the AAD. You could have just bought used gear, and then you'd have enough for an AAD (I'm sort of assuming here, but when you talk about your gear being expensive, I'm assuming it wasn't well-used). You could ask to borrow money from a friend, and sign a note to pay it back. Regardless, an adult is aware of what their means are, and lives within them. This sounds harsh, but, ya know -- it's better to fall a small distance when you're 20 than a longer distance when the stakes are higher. Right now you have rent free, food free, and college. So work on the stuff that's not easy, so that when you have to hassle with rent, food, cooking, cleaning, and a job, at least you won't be messing with how to tell people uncomfortable things. I do have to give him that.....I know a lot of people that live at home rent free during/after school because of the economy, lack of good paying jobs etc right now. That said, you asked a question about what people thought about asking for such a large gift for xmas, admitted to not wanting your parents to question how much you are paying for rig/AFP/or whatever else. skittles_of_SDC 0 #56 November 7, 2008 I told them the cost of AFP and my container. It's the main and reserve that they haven't asked me about.

skittles_of_SDC 0 #58 November 7, 2008 I thought I answered it and a couple others with the change in my sig line. I'm done with this thread now, though. It looks like all the posts that will be of value ended awhile ago.
Bertt 0 #59 November 7, 2008 Your dad is right. Only a brand new rig equipped with AAD and Skyhook will be safe enough. And a matching jumpsuit. And that old car you're driving - totally unsafe. Don't argue with the man. He's your dad.You don't have to outrun the bear.

It's just that they seem to think everything I spend my money on is a waste. They haven't said it with skydiving equipment yet... I don't know why they care, I mean it is my money. I'm pretty sure it's not because they wish I would start paying rent. Even when I was like 16 (and, yes, working for it) and had money to spend they would always be complaining about me spending money.
wmw999 2,584 #64 November 7, 2008 QuoteIt looks like all the posts that will be of value ended awhile ago. What qualifies as "value?" Think past the immediate situation. A couple of steps. Do you have savings? If your car dies, what do you do? Who's paying for your tuition? And consider what your advice would be to someone else. skittles_of_SDC 0 #65 November 7, 2008 I was mostly referring to posts such as #46 and #50. Those definitely don't qualify as value. Your last post addressed the immediate topic at hand. However, whether I should buy my own AAD, while related, wasn't the actual question. So while I don't think it had no value it's just not the kind I was looking for. I'm pretty much all tied up in the market. Sell stock. Me, it goes on my parents credit card but then I pay them back from, surprise, stocks. Advice on which? The actual question or what the thread has morphed into?
chiquita24 0 #66 November 7, 2008 *** Someday you're going to regret that. It's time to grow up and pay for things on your ownIt just amazes me that you took such offense to this! Absolutely no harm was meant by it, other than the fact that some things we want, we need to work for and pay for it ourselves rather than ask for it as a gift. Cari 0 #68 November 7, 2008 If I had enough money, I would. I would love it if my parents got me one, but I know that they can't afford it. My mom did offer to get me a nice altimeter though, so I'm happy with that! :)

Even when I was like 16 (and, yes, working for it) and had money to spend they would always be complaining about me spending money. First off Ill answer the question, if my child got into skydiving it would most likely be due to my influence. I also raise them to make smart choices and to be self sufficient. I may offer to help them get that first used right but I would not buy them anything for a hobby as an adult unless I was rich or it was a holiday, and even then an AAD is to much money. I know that anything they choose to do they will have done the research and I hope they wont be a 100 jump wonder and think they can skip certain safety aspects. As far as your parents getting on to you about what you spend your money on.... thats a parents job when you are 16 , and right now regardless of your age you are living at home, which as a parent I would to if they were in college, but I wouldnt be happy about paying the way for them only to watch them bring home gear worth thousands. And if your old enough to skydive then you are to old to be still lying to your parents when they are supporting you. Its just disrespectful. My 2 cents is basically tell them the truth, dont lie and say skydivings perfectly safe, dont pretend that the canopys were part of the rig and were no extra cost. You are taking advantage of them being wuffos, and well these are your parents. If you want an AAD, find a used one on here, set them down, explain to them why you need it and ask for a loan , and then pay them back ... Side note, do not use your college money, if its a student loan those have to be paid back, and if its a grant then use extras to help your household out or stick it in a bank. Pay cash for your hobby because if you bounce do you really want your family to not only have to deal with that and then deal with paying your gear off? Good luck.Sudsy Fist: i don't think i'd ever say this Sudsy Fist: but you're looking damn sudsydoable in this
skittles_of_SDC 0 #70 November 7, 2008 So when you were my age, you walked into the house (assuming you were living at home) after buying something expensive and told your parents exactly how much you spent on it? Without even being asked? That's how a lot of you are making it sound. Maybe most of you missed the part of the post where I said if they ask I will tell them. tetra316 0 #71 November 7, 2008 If you have money enough to be buying gear and lots of jumps why don't you have money to buy an aad? Since you are already living at home for free and paying nothing for rent/food/utilities/whatever I think it's pretty damn ballsy to also try and get them to pay for an aad. But then again I've always been very independent and have always paid my own way.

These people are getting pretty worked up in here. Seriously, what is it people? Jealousy? Are ya'll just jealous that you didn't have enough money laying around when you first started out to jump as much as you wanted and buy new gear? Are you pissed cause I still get to live at home and you guys have to pay rent or a mortgage? Quit yer bitchin' and cryin', and get over it.
