When to Take Protein?

Recommended Posts

I take protein religiously right after my workouts, however, should I also be taking it on the 2 days a week I don't workout? Note: I'm still on a mission to put on weight; I was told protein can help with this IF mixed with peanut butter (of most importance) bananas, strawberries and such... So that's what I've been doing from day 1.

Everyday! Whenever I go on a mission to bulk on the muscle, I drink 3 shakes on non workout days (morning, afternoon and before bed). then on workout days i do one in the morning, another 1 hour before workout, another immediately after workout and then another before I go to bed. Several of my friends are bodybuilders and this is what they told me to do a couple years ago and it certainly did the trick.

Don't know how old you are, but I went from 165 to 205 in less than two months on "Muscle Milk" and creatine shakes a 8 years ago.

My arms went from 11.5" to close to 17" in that timeframe, as well. I was bench pressing the weight close to that of small cars.

The bad part? The weight never came off....... and now I have a desk job......

Usually, they recommend the supplements between 60 and 90 minutes AFTER the workout. That's when the muscles are craving nourishment.

But beware, all of that milk actually promotes soreness, in the form of lactic acid buildup.

Stretch WELL to avoid that, and mix it with cardio. (I run 10 miles per week, when I can.) to keep the blood pumping, and the buildup to a minimum.

A good rule of thumb is to have as much protein a day as your body weight so i weight 185lbs so i would want to digest a minum of 185grams of protein a day. If i am working out really hard i would digest probably 200 grams a day of protein including the my days off from the gym.

The year was 1996 and we were up all night partying then went to a local diner for breakfast- still half in the bag, and one of our friends was a body builder who said to the waitress in a really good AArnold vioce "I vood like seventyfive pancakes" it was pretty funny considering that carbs are for girly men.

Thank you all for the insight.

I will try a little bit of everything and will report back in a few weeks. I just weighed myself 2 days ago, and in the last 2 weeks I've gained 2 lbs. I'm happy with that rate of progression.

Another thing that's happening is I'm eating more. I used eat only twice a day, whereas now I'm eating 4 times a day - and it looks like I'm going to have to move it up to 5 or 6... When am I going to find time to eat 6 times a day? - I don't know. :S Of course, it's only natural; you exercise and you're going to have to eat more.

I'm not trying to get BIG; its just that I've always been skinny - I mean skin and bone skinny (while eating whatever I wanted when I wanted) so I'm just trying to put on like 20 lbs - to look decent.

I'm not really worried about not losing the weight later (if I wanted to), although thank you for voicing that side of the equation. I have an ungodly fast metabolism; weight has never been an issue. I've had the absolute worst diet in the world for years, and I never gained an ounce.

:D:D:D:D:D
Lactic Acid has nothing to do with Milk:D:D:D

Lactose is a form of Sugar which is metabolised by Lactase (the enzyme). they have nothing to do with the Lactic acid (Lactate) that builds up from anaerobic respiration (nothing to do with breathing).

But that was funny:ph34r::ph34r:

Just so you understand, you can still take protein if you don't have any peanut butter around :P

There are far better things to eat for protein than peanut butter.

Eating more meals a day is actually going to speed your already fast metabolism up. What can you do though. Eating mass amounts of food at a time is not good.

Good luck with the gaining of weight, good problem to have sometimes, just don't go shoving crap down your throat to do it.

For maximum protein absorption, make sure to ask the nice gentlemen to keep it out of your hair and off your face. Aim for the mouth and I think you'll be okay. ;)

My wife takes protein shots to the face occasionally, which is why I'm HAPPILY married.

She also ecourages the protein "beanie" (shots fired on TOP of the head), the protein "Chestie" (no further explanation necesary), and the protein "de la cola"...... (look that one up for yourself, GOOGLE it)

And I HOPE her parents read this. May give them some idea of how I'm treating their daughter......
