GQ_jumper 4 #1 November 15, 2005 Can anyone tell me if there's any major difference in the flight characteristics between the original and the sabre 2? I've heard lots of people saying that the sabre 2 is a great canopy for swooping once you really learn to fly it, but what about the sabre 1.History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. --Dwight D. AggieDave 6 #2 November 15, 2005 There is a HUGE difference, about the only things similar is that they're both 9-cells, both have "Sabre" in the name and were/is manufactured by PD. If you do a search here on DZ.com you'll find a good handful of threads that go into greater detail.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." FrogNog 1 #3 November 15, 2005 I think they shouldn't have called it the Sabre2. It just produces confusion. :) I know people who swooped the hell out of the original Sabre. From my own limited experience, I found the original Sabre had more front-riser flying smoothness and more flare power (than a Sabre2 - which is still a fine-flaring canopy). The one I flew sure kept opening like a ton of bricks, though. -=-=-=-=- Pull.
crazydiver 0 #4 November 15, 2005 Sabre 2's have much nicer openings. Sabre 2's are also tapered and the originals were completely square. Recovery arc on the 2 is much longer (thats a good thing). The front riser use on the sabre 2 is much smoother. Faster. Stronger flare. Not as ground hungry. A whole new animal! Cheers, Travis
FrogNog 1 #5 November 15, 2005 CrazyDiver and I have opposite impressions of Sabre vs. Sabre2. I think that's a sign you (i.e. the original question poster) need to jump the canopies and decide for yourself. -=-=-=-=- Pull.
Sabre1Lucke 0 #6 November 15, 2005 I jumped with the Sabre 1 150 ft², Sabre 1 135 ft² and Sabre 2 135 ft². The openings on the Sabre 1 are not bad at all but the Sabre 2 opens very nice and soft. The glide angle on the sabre 2 is a little bit flatter and the flare is also better on the Sabre 2. In my opinion the frontriser pressure on the Sabre 2 is a little bit heavier but the Sabre 2 is more responsive on this. I'm sure that the sabre 2 is better for swoops because it keeps his dive longer than the Sabre 1 I jumped the Sabre 1 and the Sabre 2 with a wingload from 1.

True, they definetly should demo the canopies themselves, its not hard to get your hands on a sabre 2 demo and an original sabre from someone. Buy why would PD build a new canopy with less desireable charactersitics than an earlier one that it is replacing? Cheers, Travis
Elisha 1 #8 November 15, 2005 Would you say the glide angle of the Sabre2 is in between a Pilot and Sabre 1? Just curious. The Pilot is noticeably flatter than my old Sabre. I jumped a Sabre2-190 once, but my WL is only about .82 with that, so hard to compare when jumping a Sabre1-150, Pilot-150 and Pilot-140.
Sabre1Lucke 0 #9 November 16, 2005 Can't really tell because I never jumped a Pilot. But I can tell you that the glide angle of the Sabre2 is noticeably flatter than the angle of the old Sabre. I even used it to do a little bit CRW with a friend who is using a Stiletto 120. With my old Sabre 135 I had difficulties to keep the same level because that canopy dropped to much. But with the Sabre2 135 it wasn't a problem at all
