iluvtofly 0 #1 November 16, 2008 So...I was already scheduled to work a 16 hour shift today. No big deal I do them all the time. But, the guy who was supposed to relieve me tonight has pink eye. There was only 1 other person who could have possibly covered his shift tonight but they weren't available. So I just found out that tonight, I will be the first person to work a 24 hour shift in dispatch since this place opened in 1996. Ain't I special. I personally don't see what the big deal is. EMT's and Medic's work 24's all the time. I don't know if they're so against it just because I'm all alone in here and don't get any official breaks (I can't even leave the little room I'm in). I actually see this as an oportunity to show them what I'm capable of. However, FD and EMS get significant down time and rotate crews for the tone-outs. They do things that help prevent simple mistakes in costing people's lives. In your case, not only are civilian's lives in your hands, but also your FD, EMS and possibly PD/SO/Constables. That makes your job even more important. Especially when their lives rely on you asking the right questions to a caller. Especially when their lives rely on you relaying the correct information quickly and accurately! When is the last time you did a ride along and was reminded of how important your job is? I very rarely become angry at people's attitudes, I have a very strong ability to prevent that, but your attitude in this thread in regards to the safety of YOUR crews is appalling! Its one thing to suck it up and work an extra long shift due to problems or a major crisis, its another serious attitude check when you get online and brag about it due to a supervisor's negligent ability to setup a schedule. Its one thing to do this shift and understand that you will be at a severe disadvantage. Its completely different when you brag about it online, that you won't even be able to take a break or leave the room! If you don't see the folly of your attitude, then you should seriously rethink your career.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." I am also an EMT who works on the ambulance as well so I am fully aware of what they go through. (Much better then simply doing the ride along I actually work on the truck.) Every week I work on both sides of the fence. So I am very well aware of what the crews go through and how they don't want to deal with unncessary risks. I can proudly say I am one of the few dispatchers AND EMT's who knows exactly what it's like to be on either end.
