Welcome, any friend of Willem's is a friend of mine. Doesn't matter if you only have one skydive or 3,000. Last time I looked, there wasn't a number limit of skydives for being a member here.

Psst...........I lurk over at rockclimbing.com even though I'm not a kick ass climber;)

Inadvertently, you've discovered how ridiculously small the topics are.

People on this thread are discussing "one jump".
This is one of the topics that is beat to death.

The "what is a skydiver" question gets rehashed every 6 months.
Somehow, being a skydiver "officially" has some different value that people have to define.

So, there you have it. You have accidentally arrived as a forum topic on a topic that never goes away.

My plan is to eventually claim so much ignorance of everything skydive related that I "need" an FJC and the company should cover the cost. Seriously. :|

It's unfortunate that the guy who got hired to run the site falls (pun intended) firmly in the NOT-skydiver category. I really do intend to change that, as soon as I can. So, how much do FJC's typically cost, anyway? I'm assuming it's around $300-400.

Nah, less than that. The lovely folks at Tri-State Skydivers (I met a bunch of them at Skyfest this year), which appears to be your closest DZ, will take you up for $180.

If the corporate overlords won't pay that, start a collection here. We can have that covered in no time! >:(

Welcome to Dropzone.com, Jay. Thank you for accepting this new position. We are one big dysfunctional family, but we do have love in our heart for one another. After all, we share a unique bond. It is a small community, so we all tend to see one another at various boogies (skydiving events) and skydiving skill camps or competitions.

Although you are more of a climber, rather than a jumper, you will find many similarities between the climbing and the skydiving communities. (I used to climb regularly about 10-12 years back myself.) As a matter of fact, I know several serious climbers, who eventually have gone on to become serious skydivers. Like climbing, skydiving really is a lifestyle to many. Many travel to jump and work to afford this lifestyle. Like climbing, skydiving is our passion.

I've jumped once. And I had a guy strapped to my back when I did it.

That's wonderful, Jay. I hope that someday, you'll get your license, so you can understand how amazing it is to fly with others.

And I like boobies.

Yes, you're a skydiver in your heart.

I would love to meet and climb with you, if are ever in Southern California. Also, I work in a wind tunnel (IFLY Hollywood - indoor skydiving facility), and we'd love to have you fly with us. Take care!

~Rosa :)

Hi, I'm Chris and I'm a trouble maker.:) But I do try to stay just this side of banned.

I'm another trouble maker just barely staying this side of banned. I'm probably a lot closer to the edge than you are, Chris... :D

But, welcome to dropzone.com Jay.

Thank you so much, everybody. I'm overwhelmed! You folks are very kind.

Don't forget, though, this thread is also to solicit feedback from you, re: the site. This is essentially a brainstorm session -- nothing is off the table. Imagine it's DZ's birthday, and we're all trying to figure out what it wants.

So, how much do FJC's typically cost, anyway? I'm assuming it's around $300-400.

You probably already know by now by reading dz.com and private messages, but here's a "QuickStart Cheat Sheet":

You should also choose your FJC. Are you in a hurry because of deadlines? Or are you financially strapped? Or do you think you might progress later on? Or very scared of heights? Choices might be simplified roughly as:

Tandem
If you prefer to try it more in a potato sack fashion, (as some say). Strapped to the front of an instructor. Little training needed. Some FJC's are slightly more advanced tandems that allows you to demo altitude awareness, simple canopy control, etc.
...Difficulty: Easier
...Time: Shorter visit to DZ
...Freefall: Yes
...Fly the Parachute: Handled by instructor
...Availability: Wide. Almost every DZ. Available as single jump.

AFF1
The first jump of an Accelerated FreeFall program. More challenging than a tandem, more ground instruction. Ground school. Maximum learning experience in one jump, for those who aren't easily overloaded.
...Difficulty: Harder
...Time: Longer visit to DZ
...Freefall: Yes
...Fly the Parachute: Handled by you!
...Availability: Wide, but might require package purchase at some DZ's
(multiple-jump AFF, or tandem prerequsites)

IAD/Static Line
The first jump of an older style student program. Open parachute right away at exit. While often cheaper than AFF1, takes more jumps to become certified. Ground school.
...Difficulty: Medium
...Time: Longer visit to DZ
...Freefall: No
...Fly the Parachute: Handled by you!
...Availability: Declining, however usually available as a single jump.

________

Based on your personalty I gather, I recommend AFF1, or possibly a same-day tandem followed by AFF1 as some dropzones requires a tandem first before AFF1. Multiple jump 'get-licensed' package recommended. But it's your decision.
:)
P.S. Welcome aboard!
