Having been around since the beginning of time (almost) and having been one of the top 10 post whores for quite awhile (without ever being banned!) Otherwise slow and steady is the best policy. I was a member (and a mod for a while) of a relatively popular and well known forum in the motorcycling community. The owners sold out to Vertical Scope who own many of the motorcycling forums around the internet as well as motorcycle.com. The announced agreement was that changes to the site would be very gradual and always involve the community and moderation team. The MO of the original board was low key, well targeted advertising. The community supported this as well as the vendors. As it turned out, the main point of the take over was to fill the site with annoying and irrelevant advertising. This took place (to my eyes) over the space of a week. What was allegedly a ~4000 member and very active community turned into a ghost town in months. Some of the mods from that site started another forum (they weren't contractually obligated by a non-compete to not do so - luckily for us) that now has ~3500 members, most of whom came from the original forum. Moral of the story is that you can't make money if there aren't any members. Much as dramazone.com seem to have a bad rep amongst some, people come here for a reason, if that changes too much or too quickly it can defeat the purpose of the purchase in the first place. Best of luck running the joint, I can only imagine that it's a royal PITA! Also, you might want to make one skydive, just, you know, cause it's awesome? [:D] Keeping ads relevant and unobtrusive seems to be a recurring theme. Without making promises, I've added it to the list. I certainly want to avoid mass defections from the site. BIGUN 1,486 #45 October 15, 2008 Welcome HMFIC.(HH was taken). Personally, I don't care if you have just one jump, 10 jumps this year, 100 jumps this year or a grand. I have met some wonderful people not only at the DZ's, but also in my travels, for a meal, a beer, a party, etc. I can go online and tell folks where I'm going to be and the members of the community welcome me with open arms no matter how many jumps they have. HH did a great job in setting up this community for a wide spectrum of skydivers and the ones who felt the need to puke on the screen were shown the door. There's forum classifications of breadth, depth, application and even one for politics where Amazon is allowed to be wrong most of the time (wonder if that'll have an effect on dinner next weekend?). Here's my pet peeve about the site... An Incidents Form. Over the years, we've all lost numerous friends and there is no lesser gut wrenching feeling than to open dizzie.com and see Incidents 3, only to find a thread starting out with "I heard some twisted an ankle in.." Or, to go thru ten posts and have to piece the puzzle together. My favorite was the paraglider that went in the ocean. Request made when my username was Nightjumps Anyway.. welcome, think about it, hope to meet you at Skyfest (how shameless was that, J). j_ung 0 #49 October 15, 2008 Okay, I have to clear this up. "Freeclimbing" is any style of rock climbing in which the climber ascends using only his or her own body to do the work. You can have gear, ropes, cams, carabiners, etc., but in freeclimbing, it's only used to catch you if you fall. Conversely, "aid" climbing is when you actually use your equipment to move up the rock. Freeclimbing does not mean "no ropes." You folks are thinking of free soloing. That's not to say I don't ever free solo; I still do upon occasion. But I don't want anybody thinking that's all I do.
